Small-pox is raging almost as an epidemic in the southern part of Ballard County, Ky. There are 40 or more cases, and there have been a number of deaths.

They are talking town hall again, but talk is cheap.

The Hornet boys are immensely popular both with the people and the Government men.

Rivers

The winds are still making the rivers somewhat rough.

They say that a new lock house will be built at each lock out of the next appropriation.

Col. D.L. Sublett spent a couple of days at Jno. W. Campbell’s this week, returning to Frankfort Tuesday.

Ben O’Neal has contracted with Madison parties to build him a new ferry boat. It will be 8 x 42 feet with 20-inch hold.

J.W. Vallandingham and wife left Monday night on the Hornet for Monterey where they go to visit Mrs. Vallandingham’s parents.

The body of Jerry Roan, an Irish Madisonian, who mysteriously disappeared a month ago, was found drowned in the Ohio river a short distance below that city Tuesday.

Mrs. G.W. Martin goes to Cincinnati Monday.

J.G. Ginn is confined to his house by sickness.

John Losey of North Madison, Ind., is clerking in D.O. Wilkins’ grocery.

John Howe, the tailor, is happy over the arrival of new goods form New York.

John P. Jones has sold his farm to Miss Mary Jane English.

Miss Ella Mattix, who has been on the sick list for some time, improves but little, if any.

Miss Kizzie Tingle died last Wednesday of consumption. She was buried at the Meadows graveyard. She was 17 years old; was loved by everybody; belongs to the Baptist church and was a true Christian. She has gone to that better land where there will be no more pain nor sorrow.

1974

Retires

Mrs. M.G. (Marguerite) Evans has retired from the office of Carrollton City Treasurer after 38 years of service in that position.

Mrs. Evans began her service as City Treasurer in 1936 when she completed the unexpired term of Miss Coville Robertson. When she took the position, Harry Lawrence was major of Carrollton. Council members at the time were C.R. Bishop, E.M. Tiller, T.J. Preston, J.C. Sandefur, F.A. Stamper, and Fred May.

Anniversary

Rev. and Mrs. Virgil H. Greene will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday with an open house.

Turners Station

Lyndon Chilton has returned to his home from the Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Mrs. Carl Chilton has returned home from the King’s Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind.

Mr. and Mrs. Barry McManis and Heather, New Castle, Mr. and Mrs. Doug McManis, Campbellsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Roger McManis and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McManis.

Sanders

Misses Stella and Roberta Jacobs, Mr. James F. Jacobs, Sparta, were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Al Meece, Covington.

Dave Burns and Tony Alvarez of San Jose, Calif., were guests last week of Dave’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kirtley Burns.

Whites Run

Miss Lisia Pennington, Bucks Run Road, was a guest of Miss Karen Massey, Ghent, Friday and Saturday and they attended with a youth group from the Ghent Baptist Church for a two-day meeting at Cedar Hill.

Ricky Pennington visited his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Louden, Campbellsburg Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Wade Brunton and son, Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Oliver D. Brunton Jr., Mike and Windy, and Mrs. Duard Varble, all of Madison, Ind. were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Brunton Sr.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ellis and family of Dayton, Ohio, were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Eckler.

1999

Get Permit

After months of waiting, Carrollton was finally notified that Liter’s Quarry has been issued a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to operate a barge loading and unloading facility for sand and aggregates on the Kentucky River. The transfer yard located on the property formerly known as Bristol Steel & Iron Works was heavily opposed by many citizens of Carrollton. Liter’s Quarry purchased 20 acres last year and started the procedure to get a business license to operate.

Grand Jury

The April Term of the Trimble Circuit Court convened at Bedford Monday with Judge C.C. Marshall presiding and Commonwealth’s Attorney H.B. Kinsolving Jr. and Circuit Clerk H.A. Spillman at their desks.

The following were examined and accepted for jury service.

Grand Jury: Otto Mitchell, Wm. Daily, Lynn Bailey, J.W. Coffin, F.A. McGee, James Morgan, Joe Clem, D.G. Bell, O.R. Hill, J.W. Peak, Lawrence Moore, and Chauncey Rand.

New Hope

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Rowlett visited her mother, Mrs. Octavia Rowlett of Corn Creek.

Mrs. Maggie Rowlett and children, Pauline and John, spent Sunday with Mrs. Florence Bates.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bates were the guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wingham.

Pendleton

Miss Mary Head is spending a few days in La Grange.

The shower given for Pryor Jennings and family at Sligo Saturday was well attended and many useful presents received. Mr. Jennings recently lost his household by fire.

Glad to report Miss Bertha Carpenter, who has been very ill with pleurisy, is improving.

Trout Bottom

William Moreland, who has been very sick, is much improved.

An enjoyable leap year surprise party at Miss Nora Hamilton’s, which was a surprise not only to her but to all the family. The evening was spent with music and Mardi Gras foods. There were 14 couples present.

Misses Fannie and Esther Burkhardt are in Cincinnati where the former has a position in a telephone exchange and the latter is visiting relatives.

Locust

Mrs. Louis Coghill is on the sick list.

Mr. Howard Long is much better at this writing.

Mr. Sam Combs is recovering.

Teachers Won’t Return

At the April meeting of the Trimble County Board of Education Saturday it was learned that several teachers in the system at the present time are not applicants for jobs here next term. These include Milton Principal Ernest R. Smith and Marilyn Ogden; at T.C.H.S., athletic director James Black, Joy Venters, Mary Carolyn Joyce, Mrs. J.C. Hancock, and Mrs. Louis Garriott. Leave of absence was granted Mrs. Catherine Moreland.

Personally Speaking

Friday night guests of master Jerry Stark were Bobby Webb, Goren Bryant, David Abbott, and Joe Bell.

Little Miss Ruth Dougherty, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dougherty, was the guest Saturday night and Sunday of her grandmother, Mrs. Eva Dougherty.

Mr. and Mrs. John Southerland and sons, Louisville, called on Mrs. Ella Hill Sunday.

Weddings

Before an altar banked with beautiful spring flowers at the Bedford Baptist Church, “I dos” were said Saturday by Miss Norma Fisher and Mr. Bobby Dunlap.

A quiet wedding was solemnized Sunday afternoon at New Castle when Ruth Dunn of Carrollton became the bride of Gayle Leach, Bedford.

Typhoid

Now is the time of year when everyone should begin to be typhoid conscious. Summer will soon by here and there will be a lot of stagnant pools where flies breed and places where people fish and swim may be contaminated with the disease.

That is what 433 pupils from the first grade through high school have done recently at Trimble County High School and 71 at the Milton High School.

Verna Fisher, public health nurse, began the typhoid shots at Bedford last week and most of the 433 will complete the course.

Providence

Mrs. Mary Blackerby is on the sick list. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Guy spent the week-ed with her mother, Mrs. B.C. Sanders, and Mr. Sanders.

Wises Landing

Miss Clara Scott and Miss Joy Wallace spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Scott and Mrs. Albert Scott. Mrs. Clarence Scott returned home with them and spent Sunday night.

Mr. Chad Goode, St. Matthews, called on Tilford ad Boyce Goode Monday.

Mrs. Inez Hancock is able to sit up, we are glad to report.

New Hope

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Alexander were Sunday afternoon callers of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Jackson.

Happy Birthday!

Esther Clifford celebrated her 92nd birthday with a surprise party held in her honor at the Bedford Baptist Church where she is still a member.

Big Win

The Williamstown Lady Demons returned to Bedford for another game. Rachel Aylor claimed the duties of starting pitcher for the home team, Trimble County, and hurled herself a shutout. The Lady Raiders won in three innings, 15-0.
