Veteran enjoyed trip with TCHS students

I was very fortunate to have attended the 2011 Washington, D.C., trip with the Trimble County High School junior and senior students on April 4-8. While there, I spent much time with the students and faculty sponsors. As a military veteran, the trip was my first to our nation’s capital. The trip could not have been more special, due to the wonderful students of TCHS.

It was an honor to have been with this special group of young men and women. In their every action, they showed their character, thoughtfulness and respect. They were outstanding in all aspects. I reflect back to my service in the military, including two tours of duty in Vietnam while serving in the Army. It was an honor to have served in the service so that these young men and women get to have the choices that freedom provides our citizens. We must remember – freedom is not free.

I would also like to express my thanks for the guidance of the faculty, sponsors and parents that went on the trip. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs. Karen Long for coordinating the event. Everything went so smoothly and it was apparent that she had spent many hours planning the details so that Trimble County High School’s students could have this wonderful opportunity.

Trimble County High School and the Trimble County community should be very proud of their students and hopefully this will begin a tradition of trips to our country’s capital. I firmly believe that every high school in our country should provide the opportunity for students that wish to go to take a trip to Washington, D.C., to do so. Perhaps then more would understand the sacrifices that generations have made to ensure that they have the freedoms that we all enjoy.
