  • Trimble Raider Gilder to play in...

    While some Trimble County High School students spent the summer relaxing and hanging out with their friends, Megan Gilder was spending time on a softball field making her dreams come true.

    Gilder, who will be a senior at Trimble County High School this year, has been given an opportunity to do something many dream of the first time they play catch in the front yard or step up to the plate in their inaugural Little League game. She is competing in the Softball World Series.

  • Unmotivated fish spoil...

    Living in a river town, it would seem that everybody should know how to fish. It’s the same reasoning that would require everyone living in the Swiss Alps to know how to ski.

    But I have lived on the Ohio River – in both directions from Cincinnati – for 25 years, and I still “fish” on a blanket with a book.

    I have baited my children’s hooks and removed fish from those same hooks, but as far as sitting there with a pole in my hand waiting for something to bite the other end –  not so much.

  • Panther Select team puts all-...

    The under-10 Panther Select baseball team finished its season Tuesday, July 29, with a bang, putting the Carroll County minor league all-star team through its paces as the team gears up for tournament season.

    Both teams consist of players under 10 years old; but the Panther Select team, with 9- and 10-year-olds, has been playing together since March. The extra experience was obvious at the  July 22 scrimmage at Robert Westrick Memorial Park.

  • Vannarsdall, 10, reels in 7-...

    Dakota Vannarsdall, a young local angler, doesn’t have to tell any “fish tales” about the one that got away.

    It took three tries, but Dakota and his brother, Logan, finally dragged in a large-mouth bass weighing almost 7 pounds to the edge of a local farm pond. The fish measured 21 inches long.

    Dakota is the 10-year-old son of Keith and Missy Vannarsdall, and said he loves to fish almost as much as he loves playing basketball.

  • Carroll’s U10, U12...

    It was all softball all weekend at the county’s Robert Westrick Memorial Park.

    Thirteen teams took the fields in two tournaments Saturday and Sunday for the Under 10 and Under 12 age groups.

    Carroll County fielded three teams in the weekend marathon, one in U10 and two in U12.

    Saturday was devoted to pool play in both divisions. Winners of those games determined the brackets in Sunday’s games.

  • NFL star Moss debuts racing team...

    SPARTA, Ky. – Having accomplished everything shy of winning the Super Bowl as a wide receiver of the New England Patriots, Randy Moss turned his attention to another form of competition Saturday.

    Moss, who bought a 50-percent share in Morgan-Dollar Motorsports several weeks ago, made his debut as a truck owner on July 19 at the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway, accomplishing a dream.

    The debut marked the end of six months of hard work.

    Yellow Jacket football

    Children ages 6-14 are eligible to sign up for Yellow Jacket football.

    Sign-ups are 7-8 p.m. July 14-15 and 23-24 on the field behind Cartmell Elementary School.

  • Signups start this month for...

    Carroll County Parks and Recreation will be having soccer sign-ups July 21 through August 1 for children 3-13 years old. Sign-ups will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday in the third-floor office in the Carroll County Courthouse, downtown Carrollton.

    Fees for the leagues are: children 5 and younger, $15; children in the four leagues for 6- through 13-year-olds, $25, plus $15 for each sibling.
