    Unlimited hydroplane racing is returning to Arizona! H1 Chairman Steve David made the announcement Sunday, July 31, while attending the 2016 HAPO Columbia Cup in Kennewick, Washington.
    “We are excited to announce that H1 has received a commitment to bring the unlimited hydroplanes back to Phoenix for a national high point race,” David said. “The Pleasant Lake Recreational Park and the 10,000 acre lake serves as a major recreation hub for the northwest Phoenix metropolitan area.”

    J. Michael Kelly, driving the U-5 Graham Trucking, was named the winner of the 2016 HAPO Columbia Cup on Sunday after a controversy-filled final heat.
    Fans might have left the shoreline of the Columbia River thinking that Jimmy Shane drove the U-1 Miss HomeStreet Bank (Miss Madison) to victory.
    Shane had been driving in Lane 1 of the five-lap final, when he and Jean Theoret in the U-16 Oh Boy! Oberto — driving in Lane 2 — collided in the turn.
    Race officials immediately handed Theoret a one-lap penalty.

    The 2016 H1 Unlimited racing series resumes this weekend in Pasco, Wash., where nine unlimited hydroplanes will compete for the HAPO Columbia Cup on the Columbia River. Although it is the final weekend of July this is only the second race of a five-event season for the world’s fastest competitive watercraft.

    KENNEWICK, Wash.---Jimmy Shane has been the most dominant H1 Unlimited Hydroplane driver over the last two seasons.  He has won two consecutive National High Point Season Championships, 12 consecutive heat races (17 of the last 18) and is coming off a season-opening victory at the MainSource Bank Indiana Governor’s Cup Madison (Ind.) Regatta presented by Belterra Casino Resort – his third H1 race win in a row.
