  • Coach Vernon Craig passes

    Longtime Trimble County educator and coach Vernon Craig, died Sept. 1, 2017 at his Trimble County residence. He was 93.
    Craig was a longtime fixture in local high school sports. As a high school athlete, he was a member of a Trimble County High School Blue Demons team that included such teammates as the late Jim Black, the late Hayward Tingle, and the late Jack Tingle who went on to achieve All American status for Coach Adolph Rupp’s University of Kentucky Wildcats and played in the NBA.

    The Trimble County cross country program hosted the Backwoods Invitational Saturday at the Trimble County Park. Students representing 13 schools competed in the event.

    Carroll County traveled to Bedford to take on the Trimble County Lady Raiders and came home with the win 2-0, (25-13, 25-14), Aug. 23, which snapped a seven match losing streak.  Carroll County head coach Lynn Eaglin said she had looked up the last time “we had beaten them and it was Sept. 16, 2014 and we won 2-0 (25-16, 25-22).”

    DETROIT---Talk about throwbacks.
    Andrew Tate’s flying start for Saturday Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest President’s Cup championship final heat was reminiscent of the late, great hydroplane driver Bill Muncey.  Muncey was known for great, flying starts as he blew by the opponents to go on and win a race.

    DETROIT---Jimmy Shane knew he had the team and boat to make some noise at the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest and when he did put it all together, Shane came home with the most prestigious trophy of the weekend. Shane in the U-1 Miss Homestreet/Miss Madison made a perfect start in the five-lap championship final heat from lane two and then ran away from the field to capture to the oldest active trophy in all of the motorsports—the APBA Gold Cup for the team’s third win in four years.
