  • Raiders fought valiantly in season opener loss at Berea

    By JAMES LINE

    Special to The Trimble Banner

The Trimble County High School football team started off its 2012 season more determined than ever after a disappointing loss at Berea High School, 38 - 0, on Friday, August 18.

Prior to the game, a few Raiders felt somewhat intimidated by the physical size of the Berea players. The pre-game mood was serious and tense as Trimble prepared mentally for an uphill battle.

  • Trimble coach has great expectations for Lady Raiders

With a 2-0 win over Owen County in their home opener Monday, the Trimble County Lady Raiders have won three straight contests to start the 2012 volleyball season.

Trimble opened the season on the road with a 3-1 win over Martha Layne Collins High School [21-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20] on Aug. 7. The girls followed that two nights later by winning the best of three sets at Walton-Verona [25-19, 17-25 and 25-18].

For the first time in the 95-year history of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Boys’ Sweet 16, the tournament championship game will be played sometime other than Saturday night.

The traditional state tournament format will change for the 2013 event due to potential scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena and the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team on Saturday, March 9.

  • New head coach to lead Raider football

Trimble County High School has a new head football coach for the second year in a row. Carrollton resident Justin Franklin succeeds William Blair III who left the program and a teaching position at Trimble County Middle School following the 2011-12 school term ended.

Franklin, a 1999 Carroll County High School graduate, is married to the former Krista Hughes of Trimble County. Franklin served as an assistant football coach at Manual High School for the past four years, according to Trimble County High School Athletic Director Frank Ragland.

Trimble County High School is getting its own baseball, softball and tennis facilities.

Previously, football players shared their field with the baseball players. This was accomplished by building a fence across the 40-yard line and then taking it down after baseball season, said Trimble County Schools Superintendant Marcia Dunaway.

Softball players went to the middle school to practice, and tennis players went to the county park.
