  • Summer program gave artist new...

    Have you ever had an experience that made you know you were really alive? I don’t just mean alive as in living and breathing; I mean a time when you felt as though you could do anything you put your mind to?  

    I had this type of experience at Governor’s School for the Arts this summer, where I studied instrumental music on the flute.  The faculty members were amazing performers and teachers. They were encouraging and positive, and helped us improve our music in even the most minuscule ways.

  • Golf scramble for Ky. sheriffs&...

    The 13th annual Owen and Carroll County Charity Golf Scramble was Monday, July 14, at Fairway Golf Course in Wheatley, Ky.

    Carroll County Sheriff Ben Smith co-hosted the event, which was a huge success. Proceeds benefit boys and girls ages 8-11 from throughout Kentucky, allowing them to attend the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Boys and Girls Ranch.

  • Thanks for St. Jude donations

    To the editor,

    The children of Debbie’s Daycare in Bedford want to thank everyone who sent donations and gave money at the roadside collection site, along with the ladies at the cemetery who donated to our cause the day of the St. Jude’s walk/trike-a-thon July 11.

  • Parents, students invited to TCMS...

    Trimble County Middle School invites students and their parents to “Back to School Night” Tuesday, Aug. 5. Students will have an opportunity to meet their teachers for the new school year and receive their schedules, course expectations, locker assignments, supply lists and enrollment forms.

    There will be orientation for incoming sixth-graders and new student at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Orientation for returning seventh- and eighth-graders begins at 7 p.m.

  • Even the poorest children know...

    While the Carroll County Reads program is all wrapped up, I am still thinking about some of the issues the book, “Three Cups of Tea,” raised in my mind.

    I picture these poorest of children living in mud-walled houses that are heated in the winter with dried yak dung.

    Yes, yak dung.

    The families have very little. For some, a good quilt is an heirloom to be handled with great care and brought out only for the most important company.

    On behalf of the Carrollton/Carroll County Tourism Office, I would like to thank those who contributed to the “Welcome Bag” items distributed to members and competitors at the National Bass Anglers Association fishing tournament May 13-17 at Point Park in Carrollton.

  • First Baby Bottle fund-raiser...

    The first Baby Bottle fund-raiser showed overwhelming support toward Haven of Hope Pregnancy Services.

    Area church congregations took home more than 400 baby bottles on Mothers Day and returned them on Fathers Day filled with checks, cash and coins totaling just over $5,000.

    The money will be used to purchase educational materials and will assist in opening the pregnancy center later this fall.

  • King family reunion was well-...

    The King family held its 47th reunion on July 13, 56 family members turning out for the event. They came as far away as Greensburg, Ind., and Shepardsville Ky. Some were from Warsaw and Owenton, Ky. Many were from right here in Carrollton.

    There were stories told and old pictures to share of family history past. Many games were played and good old home cooking shared.

  • Fourth Carroll County Reads wrapped...

    When I was a kid, I loved to read. I remember spending dark, gloomy Saturdays reading books I’d taken out of the library at school, or our county library – to which I was a card-carrying member from a very early age.

    As an adult, I’m ashamed to say that I’m lucky to read more than one book a year.

    It’s my own fault, ultimately, for not taking the time to do it. The time is there, but the will doesn’t always follow.

  • You don’t have to be an...

    It's true. I could be the next American Idol.

    But that’s only if Paula, Randy and Simon, the show’s celebrity judges, are willing to cruise around town in my SUV.

    My singing voice leaves quite a bit to be desired, except when I’m driving. Prop me up behind the wheel of my Suzuki and I can belt out a few verses of "Bobby McGee" as well as Janis Joplin ever could. I also do a fine rendition of most James Taylor and Lenny Kravitz’s tunes.

    As a member of the Carroll County Tobacco Festival Committee, we work alongside the Fair Board to do a few fund-raisers for the year. And we all work as a team to make the events run as smooth as possible.

  • Bible school project aids historic...

    The English Christian Church had a wonderful Vacation Bible School last week while using the Power Lab theme. Student average was 26 and worker average was 35.

    A very rewarding part of the week was the Mission Project, which collected $250, plus a special love offering of $300. This offering was presented to the members of the Second Baptist Church in Carrollton to help in the clean up of their parsonage, which was extensively damaged by frozen water pipes last winter. Additionally, the sanctuary needs some repairs.
