    Keith Ball, ASCS manager, said this week that 80 percent of the Trimble county tobacco crop has been stripped. Sales commence again on Monday.
    A 2-percent penalty will go on all unpaid taxes January 1, 1982, according to Sheriff David B. Craig.

    Chantel Courtney, daughter of DeeDee and Shane Courtney is one year old and doing what any normal one year old would do. Chantel was born two months early and weighed only 3 pounds, one ounce.

    A Trimble County man was among more than 2,400 Americans who were killed in the Japanese attack on U.S. military installations in and around Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, 70 years ago this month.

  • Reunion stories are the best

    I love a good reunion story.

    A few years ago The New York Times ran a story about then-New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel and a young man named John Mathieson.

    Thirty-four years prior to Fassel and his wife Kitty meeting Mathieson they had been 19 and unmarried — and the parents of a baby boy whose birth and adoption they kept secret from all but their immediate families.

    And for 34 years, every April 5 the Fassels privately wished their baby boy a Happy Birthday, adding, “Wherever you are, we hope you’re OK.”

    30 Years Ago (Dec. 24, 1981)

    Melissa Miller won the honor of All State Band Person and will be going to Cincinnati, Feb. 4-5-6 to participate in a musical clinic under direction of a guest conductor, who will conduct a concert as a climactic crescendo.

    It was a jolly ole Santa Day Friday at the Farmers Bank of Milton as kiddies came by the score to talk with Santa and tell him what they wanted for Christmas

  • Flunking sainthood

    This week I turned 57.

    I thought by this age I’d get the hang of the whole sainthood thing. The Protestant definition of a saint is simply a follower of Jesus.

    However, that doesn’t seem enough. There should be more to it than that. For instance, by now I should have at least the beginning buds of a halo or be able to say no to temptation eight out of 10 times — or two out of 10!

    But the truth is, I still struggle.

    Years Ago (Dec. 17, 1981)
    Glen Perkinson took over the duties of Property Valuation Administrator on Dec. 7. His office staff includes Shirley Ginn and Tammi Hatton.
    Northbank Ski Management plans to open Dec. 16-18 depending on the weather and the snow machines. This will be the first major alpine ski slope in the Bluegrass State and it can be used at Butler State Park.

    Trimble County Bands from 5th grade through high school and Jazz ensemble had a concert Dec. 13.

  • The ‘rest’ of the story

    In the past few years, my husband and I have made it a tradition to eat Christmas dinner at a nearby inn that serves a humungous buffet.

    Without fail, every time we go I bemoan the fact that my stomach can’t accommodate large quantities of food.

    I’ve seen people eat stacks of pancakes the size of Rhode Island and whole sides of beef and think that maybe I can do that too, but I can’t.

    30 Years Ago (Dec. 3, 1981)
     Approximately 1,000 users on the current water system in Milton has necessitated the construction of a 100,000 gallon standpipe and work is expected to commence on the project as soon as advertising procedures are finalized by Irene P. Long, attorney for the City of Milton.
    Leigh Etta Staples received All Tournament Team plaque in the Capital City Classic.
    Milton’s sewer system work is expected to commence in the spring.

    Farmers Bank of Milton honored four employees last week with tokens of appreciation for years of service: Roger Bradley, Cashier and Director 15 years, Judy Burkhardt, Assistant Cashier, 20 years, Jeanette Pirtle, Assistant Cashier 30 years and Marie Strasmeier, 25 years.

    School board members Carole Martin, Glenn Fisher, James McMahan, Jack Carder, Wendell Williams and Superintendent Bill Stout were optimistic about Trimble’s educational facilities Thursday night at the new high school building’s open house. The school, nearly completed, will cost $2,700,000. Construction funds were generated from a special voted school building fund tax and a $933,525 grant from the Kentucky School Building Authority.

    30 Years Ago (Nov. 19, 1981)

    Sondra Rodgers, movie actress and Trimble County native, was hospitalized after a mugging near her Hollywood, Calif. home.

    Work will be beginning on 7.5 miles of sewer system for the town of Bedford tomorrow, Nov. 20. The system is financed, Mayor James D. Black said, by a $1,100,000 EPA grant, supplemented by a $525,000 government loan, and an additional $52,000 FHMA loan was obtained to assist low income people whose incomes were not sufficient to hook onto the system.
