  • Very large birds seem to be attracted to me. I like birds but I have never gone to any major efforts to all attention to myself. This situation began with the appearance of a vulture.

  • I’ve lived in Florida long enough to know that sometimes we have drought conditions and sometimes the water in the rivers and lakes gets so high it overflows.
About five years ago, this area of Florida was bone dry. It was so dry that a local man who lived on a canal -- “waterfront property” -- converted the dried-out canal off his boat dock into a golf course, complete with putting green, fairway and a tall grass hazard.

Jeanette McCreary, daughter of John and Diana McCreary of Bedford, was crowned the 1987 Miss Trimble County Saturday among eight other contestants. Selected to grace her court were Shelley Hankinson, First Runner-up and Miss Congeniality; Melani Tingle, Second Runner-up; and Christel Gibson, Third Runner-up and talent competition winner.

  • It was a normal day with nothing unusual happening. My daughter and I were getting ready to go out for a while to get away from the house. Just as we entered my car something told me to check my phone. Sure enough I had two text messages from my husband. Unfortunately, his car had broken down many miles from home. I called to hear the game plan. He needed me to help him get his car to our mechanic. I agreed to go collect him giving no thought as to what “getting the car to the mechanic” was going to involve.

  • About two years ago, we became caretakers of two cats when our youngest daughter moved back home to rebuild her life.
Last year, she moved in with a friend who has two dogs -- and an allergy to cats. So, we agreed to take care of Target and Mohawk until our daughter lives in a more cat-friendly space.
They’re old cats, probably 13- or 14-years old, which is between 63 and 66 in human years.
They take a lot of naps.
They also sometimes barf on the carpet (but rarely on the tile), and they sometimes sneeze on the windows and the furniture.

  • My poor, hapless garden has been suffering at my hands for several years. Despite my most well-intentioned of efforts to grow anything, something rots, disappears or develops mysterious holes overnight. I’ve never seen such misfortune afflict one garden in my life. I suppose I thought that last year was the time for the garden to turn the tide and flourish.

  • Who doesn’t love the pleasant music of wind chimes as they dance with the breeze?  Certainly not I. My husband and I went on a quest to find a set of the larger, more resonant variety for the front porch. However, once we found the desired set we decided that it was high time for the front porch to be repainted, so off went the chimes and all of its entourage of ornamentation to the back porch.

  • By the time you read this, this will be old news and the nation will most likely have already moved on to the next outrageous thing.
However, as I’m writing this, Kathy Griffin is making headlines.
Who is Kathy Griffin (and why should you care)? She’s a 56-year-old comedian and self-identified “D-list celebrity” known for being abrasive, brash, crude and sarcastic.
Most recently she made the national news when she posed for a photo, holding up the fake, but realistic, bloody decapitated head of President Donald Trump.

  • My husband hates two things: lying and cockroaches.
And if there’s such a thing as a lying cockroach, then that critter should especially sleep with one eye open.
The thing about cockroaches, or “palmetto bugs,” the more genteel name they’re called in the South, they prefer staying hidden in the dark.
So, your house could be crawling with them and you might never know since they hate the daylight. That means, once the sun goes down and you and your family are snug in your beds, these pests come out to feast and play.
