Policeman gunned down in 1937...

A new memorial wreath marker adorns the Milton grave of Trimble County native and slain Cleveland, Ohio police officer Virgil T. Bayne.

The commemorative marker was donated by the Greater Cleveland Peace Officer’s Memorial Society in memory of Bayne, who at the time of his death in 1937, had served for 17 years as a patrolman with the Cleveland Police Department.

The Trimble County Fiscal Court approved the proposed 1983-84 county budget at its May 16 meeting. The county estimated receipts from all sourced during the coming fiscal year amounts to $566,488.20. The budget will be sent to the state local finance officer for final approval.

The Trimble County School Board discussed a reduced budget for the upcoming 2013-14 school year during their regularly scheduled bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 15.

Certified Public Accountant Robert Wagoner was on site to outline the pecuniary report. Wagoner informed the board that they would be working with nearly $1.4 million less than last year.

A Kentucky State Police detective had a strong warning for the student body of Trimble County High School last week when he addressed the criminal ramifications of posting nude photographs on the Internet and “sexting.”

Memorial Day: Remember the cost...

For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom.

It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years.  It is believed to have begun in the South, when Confederate widows decorated not only the graves of their loved ones but also those of Union soldiers, knowing their families were grieving as well.

Courtney repeats as high jump...

Trimble County’s Kelsie Courtney added another state championship to her high school track and field credits Saturday by claiming the Class A girls’ high jump title for the second year in a row.

Several Trimble athletes qualified for the state competition, which was held at the Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park on the University of Louisville campus.

Commencement for the Trimble County High School Class of 2013 begins at 10 a.m. at the TCHS gymnasium.

Wesleyan Holiness plans revival services

The Trimble Wesleyan Holiness Church, located at 4834 Peck Pike Road in Milton, will hold revival services beginning Tuesday, May 28, through Sunday, June 2. Services will be held at 7 p.m. nightly and at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 2.

The evangelist and singers will be Rev. Steve Cassady and family. Pastor Curtis Burge and the congregation extend a welcome to all to attend.

Carpenter bees are here

For the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed what looks like bumble bees flying around your outdoor storage building, barns or even your home. These insects are called carpenter bees. Although carpenter bees are beneficial pollinators, they can cause considerable structural damage over time. Carpenter bees spend the winter as adults in their gallery homes. Now, they are starting new tunnels or expanding old ones in order to raise a brood of about 6 larvae during the summer. Accumulations of sawdust may be the first sign that their work has begun.
