  • Firefighter would like statewide fire museum

    As a charter member of the Hayes Crossing/Haldeman Volunteer Fire Department, I would like to make a suggestion that would involve all 120 County and City Fire Departments in the state of Kentucky.

    I feel like it’s time to establish a Kentucky Fire Department Museum. Contributions of Fire Department history could come from every Fire Department in Kentucky. Since we have several hundred Fire Departments in Kentucky.

    An old tobacco warehouse not being used would make a very suitable place to display trucks and equipment.

  • Brockman steps down as county’s Relay chair

    I’d like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone for your help in making our Relay For Life so successful.

    When the American Cancer Society asked me to be county chairman, I said I’d to it for two years. We’ve more than doubled that, and it’s time for me to get out of the way and let someone else take the lead.

  • Web site offering new features; N-D increases its online presence

    First, I just want to say that I am extremely optimistic for our country’s future. Whether you voted for Barak Obama or not, I hope we will finally all start working together, despite party alignments, and get the United States back on track.

    The world is watching us; our friends, allies and even some of less-than-friendly countries have indicated they will support the new administration.

    I hope that we all do, too.

  • Holiday food drive successful, but need continues

    I would like to express my appreciation to the people of Carroll County who participated in the Christmas food basket distribution this year.

    Whether they donated canned goods to the “Scouting For Food,” gave money or gift cards so we could buy perishable items, sorted and shelved donated items, or packed and distributed food baskets – it was a tremendous effort by this community to feed our hungry neighbors.

    You only have to turn on the television or pick up a newspaper to learn that another retail business has closed its doors. Circuit City, The Sharper Image, Mrs. Fields and Linens ’N Things are just a few of more than 73 well-known retailers that filed for bankruptcy in 2008. Analysts predict another 170,000 retail stores will close their doors in 2009.

    Can retail businesses “weather the storm” of this economy until relief is available and the consumer no longer fears spending money?
