  • Story ignored positives of young man's life

    Why? This article is my response to this week’s story about Tommy “Shooney” Jones Jr. that was printed in The News-Democrat. [Oct. 15, 2008, Page 1.]

    It breaks my heart how so many times in a small town people love to print all of the dirty laundry and negative things about people before they have all the facts.

  • All-day event to raise funds for accessible park

    With millions of dollars being spent on negativity, come spend your money where it really makes a difference.

    This Saturday, Oct. 25, is National Make a Difference Day. Millions of people all over the United States will be making a real difference in the lives of others.

    The Friends For Michael Inc., a spinal cord injury organization, will be at the site of the new Henry County Recreation and Services park on U.S. Hwy 421, just north of New Castle, Ky., 1125 Campbellsburg Road, rain or shine.

  • Derby cars shouldn’t be targeted in city

    I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that different events that are promoted in town were to bring in people: the Blues Festival, car shows, the Scottish Weekend and Demolition Derbies.

    When people attend these, they spend money for lodging, gas, food, etc. You get the trickle-down effect, which then helps tourism. Isn’t that the main goal? I think we’re a town not a city, such as Louisville. Some enjoy culture, others derby cars.

  • Amazing trip with amazing people had outstanding results

    Every now and then in my career, I’ve had opportunities to do some amazing things.

    Topping the list, by far, was the invitation to travel to Arizona and the Grand Canyon with the group of volunteers who attempted to take Sarah Service to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

    From the first time Chris White had told me about the trips, a few weeks before they planned to leave, I daydreamed about going. I knew it would be an awesome experience.

    So, I was thrilled when Amy Hewitt called and said she chose me to be the one person she could take along.

  • Jones a good man who will be dearly missed

    In the Oct. 15, 2008, edition of The News-Democrat, there was an article entitled “Drugs suspected in death of 26-year-old,” by Sharon Graves.  

    As a friend and former co-worker of Tommy Jones Jr., about whom this article was written, I was compelled to state my sincere disapproval of its content. This piece of journalism came out a few days after the shocking death and funeral of a very young man who will be dearly missed by many friends and family members.

  • Derbies bring money, tourism to county

    As I sat on a bleacher Oct. 11 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds around the demolition derby ring, I gazed out at the humongous crowd attending the 2008 Fall Brawl.

    I’ve attended several of these events in the past, but on Saturday we had enthusiasts from Southern Kentucky, Northern Ohio, Indiana and other surrounding states and surrounding counties. The comments made by these visitors were very complimentary to our promoters, the Fair Board, the county and the participants of the derby.
