  • Reader encourages community involvement in Bedford Bash

    Our 22nd Annual Bedford Bash is just around the corner on August 26th, 2011.  Entertainment will consist of Trimble County High School Band and Trimble County cheerleaders starting at 6:30 p.m., then Young Country starting at 7 p.m. Asphalt Angels will be having a car show around the courthouse. The theme is “Military Pride.” We will draw for gifts at different times during the evening.

  • Crusade volunteer expresses appreciation

    I have collected for the Crusade for Children for 29 years as a member of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department.  My home territory includes both Bray Ridge and Gills Ridge.  I want to commend my neighbors and friends for their generosity again this year.  I was able to collect nearly $957.00 in checks, plus a bucket of loose change.  People literally flagged me down when they saw me around the farm, mowing grass or checking on the cows, to give me their money for the Crusade.

    Forty-five years I have proudly been active in the grass roots movement, from local elections and state elections. During that time I have seen it all from good servants of we the people to the good old boys that fool the voters to place them into the seat of power. Many of our elected officials here at home and sometimes beyond are the cream of the crop and they well deserved our support and votes.

    Why not make the old library the new Adult Education Building?

    With the high level of high school children dropping out of school this poses a problem with the overcrowding at the present location. Sure, someone is going to have to pay for it but let’s concentrate on our young adults’ education.

    Bob’s Bunch Walk to Defeat ALS

    Bob, along with 62 family members and friends walked on May 14, 2011 to raise money for research to cure ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s.    We were one of the largest groups present and raised over $8000.   Through the hard work of volunteers that placed canisters in the community, sold cookbooks and requested donations, we were able to go over our original goal of $1000.

  • Candidate’s campaign modest in finances

    I am John Lackey, candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture.

    It is appalling what candidates for public office feel they have to spend to win election. No middle class person can afford these sums. Larger contributors do expect something in return.

    My campaign hopes to show that voters appreciate a qualified, hands-on candidate who finances a modest appeal from personal resources. This lets an elected official call them as he or she sees them, without influence from groups seeking a personal interest.

  • Importance of foster parenting during May Natl. Foster Care Month

    May is National Foster Care Month, a time to shine the light on the foster care experience. Let’s start with some figures:

    More than 6,800 Kentucky children and youth are in out-of-home care, with 75 to 80 percent of those in foster care. Most are placed in temporary foster care due to parental neglect or abuse.

    The average age of a child in care: 10.7 years.

    More than 73 percent of the children/youth in care are white; 19.3 percent are black and 4.3 percent are Hispanic.
