  • Testing Trimble's emergency preparedness

    It was only a test, but to a casual onlooker it could have seemed like the real thing.

    Emergency responders from throughout Trimble County were called out about 9 a.m. Saturday to a mock hazardous materials training drill at the Bray Ridge water pumping station, owned and operated by the Trimble County Water District.

  • Jackson, Melvin beat challengers

    After a seemingly endless political season, Trimble County voters spoke Tuesday and the results are in. Voters spoke loudly, too, with about 45 percent of registered voters going to the polls.

    In Trimble County’s main contested races, Denny Jackson prevailed over challenger Steve Brierly to retain the mayor’s office in Milton. Jackson received 143 votes to Brierly’s 54 votes.

    Jackson, who had served on the commission for more than a decade, was appointed mayor in October 2009 after the unexpected death of then-Mayor Donnie Oakley.

  • FOREST FIRE SCORCHES 15 ACRES

    Emergency responders had a busy night Thursday, starting with a forest fire on a steep hillside near Wise’s Landing, soon followed by a house fire on Colbert Lane and a two-vehicle accident with injuries on Morton Ridge Road.

    The first call came from Charles and Besty Liston at 4:47 p.m., who called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the woods below their house, located at the end of Ralston Road.

  • Wood calls it a day

    Perhaps snow, rain, heat or the gloom of night never kept Pete Woods from completing his appointed rounds, but retirement will.

    Wood, who has been a mail carrier for the Milton Post Office for nearly 39 years, will finish his route for the last time on Friday, Oct. 1.

    Postmaster Cecilia Oak is hosting a retirement open house for Wood from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Milton Post Office in downtown. The public is invited to attend.
