  • Late LG&E tax payment stymies county

    Trimble County Sheriff Tim Coons told Fiscal Court on Monday that he is still awaiting payment for 2010 franchise taxes owed by LG&E’s Wise’s Landing generating plant.
    Coons said the corporation’s taxes were due in November, but were late because LG&E disputed the amount owed. A state arbitrator determined the amount owed – a total of $856,000; LG&E has 30 days to remit payment, Coons said.

  • Bridge project web cam now live

    Intrigued by the plans to replace the superstructure of the Milton-Madison Bridge?
    You’re in luck.
    The new web cam set up by Walsh Construction is now live on the project website, MiltonMadisonBridge.com. The camera, mounted on a pole on Vaughn Drive in Madison, Ind., faces east toward Milton, Ky., and snaps one photo every 15 minutes – day and night – of the entire span.

  • Public meeting on bridge rescheduled

    Due to Tuesday’s winter storm, the public meeting scheduled for that night with Milton-Madison Bridge project officials was cancelled.
    The meeting has been reschuduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. at Milton Elementary School.
    In the meantime, crews continue to mobilize equipment and materials at the Vaughn Drive staging area in Madison. Work is set to begin this week on an access ramp that will lead to a causeway near the bridge where barges will unload construction materials.

  • Milton woman pleads not guilty to Henry County charges

    NEW CASTLE, Ky. – A Milton woman found in November unconscious in her still-running car, with two small children in the backseat, entered a not guilty plea in Henry County District Court.
    Kathy J. Thornton, 44, was charged on Nov. 15 with driving under the influence and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment after Kentucky State Police responded to a report of a car in the middle of Pendleton Road with an unconscious driver.
    At her arraignment on Jan. 3, Thornton pleaded not guilty to the charges.

  • McCane case ends in mistrial

    Just one day after a Trimble County jury began hearing testimony in the rape/sexual abuse case against Bedford resident Marion “Frank” McCane Sr., Circuit Court Judge Karen Conrad called a mistrial.
    McCane defense attorney Tobi Shartzer said the mistrial was the result of a misunderstanding over suppression of information that was introduced during his cross-examination of the first witness, Kentucky State Police Detective Todd Harwood.

  • Stevens arrested in Madison for drunken driving

    Trimble County Judge-Executive Randy Stevens, 43, was arrested Saturday, Jan. 7, on drunken-driving charges in Madison, Ind.
    According to a spokeswoman for the Madison Police Department, a Madison officer stopped Stevens at 3:41 a.m. at the corner of East Street and Vaughn Drvie. At the time, Stevens’ blood-alcohol content was above 0.08, the legal limit in Indiana.

    JANUARY

    Milton’s Masons and Lions members celebrated the grand re-opening of their new shared clubhouse. The Lions Club invited the Masonic Lodge No. 947 to share its space, allowing the Masons to build their own meeting room onto the existing building.
    The Masons also paid for renovations to the building, including making the restrooms handicapped accessible.
    The project cost about $35,000.

  • Texting, driving can result in fines

    Texting and driving? You may want to pull over.
    On Jan. 1, a state law went into effect to help Kentucky law enforcement officials reduce the dangerous problem of “distracted driving.”
    Anyone caught texting while driving will face a $25 fine for the first offense, plus court costs. Subsequent offenses carry a $50 fine, plus court costs.
    The law also prohibits anyone younger than 18 from using a cell phone, even just to talk, while driving a vehicle. The same fines apply to violators.
