  • O death, where is thy sting?

For me, last week began and ended with funerals.
On Monday, I attended the funeral of Mary Zawalich, whom I’d never met, or maybe I have and I don’t remember.
About a month ago, she called me. She told me her name and said she was 92 and she was dying, but that it was OK, that it was a “happy death.”
She had called to say that she’s been a reader of my column and that I’ve been a “wonderful part” of her life. She called to thank me, to say that she admired me, that she has loved me.

  • Short Section of Milton-Madison Bridge slid into place today

A 100-foot concrete section on the Kentucky side of the Milton-Madison Bridge has been slid into place. The slide began this morning just after 11:30 and was completed in less than two hours. Workers are now conducting finishing touches. Today’s slide is a precursor to the slide of the main half-mile-long steel truss section of the bridge, which is expected to take place later this month.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that since 2007, at least 270 people were senselessly killed nationwide in crashes involving drunken drivers during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.  Those fatalities were preventable.

Louisville, Ky.– Volunteers will be out in force next week to spring clean Trimble County’s highways. The Transportation Cabinet announces that Adopt-a-Highway Spring Clean Week is March 17-23.

  • New falcon box in place on bridge

The peregrine falcons that have made the Milton-Madison Bridge their home over the years have a new nest.  A new falcon box has been put in place on the underside of the new bridge over the water.
Since 2002, falcons have been known to make the bridge their nesting spot.  When the new Milton-Madison Bridge work began, the project took measures to protect these birds of prey.  As construction progressed, the falcon box was located on old pier #5 – the only pier that was not being re-used.  Two weeks ago, the old pier was demolished.
