  • Commissioners agree every penny counts when trimming expenses

    How does the Milton city commission make ends meet in these tough financial times?

    The same way the families they serve do – they look for ways to trim expenses.

    Commissioners gathered in a special meeting Sept. 30 to discuss options to reduce the city’s expenses without compromising services.

    “It’s crunch time,” Commissioner Steve Brierly said during the meeting. “It’s time to really get tight [with expenses].”

  • Runnin’ Raiders travel to Indiana invitational

    The Runnin’ Raiders ran in the Madison Courier Invitational this weekend.

    The race was held Sept. 27 at Hanover College, the NCAA Division III National College Championship XC course. Teams such as Silver Creek (IN), Switzerland County (IN), Madison (IN), Austin (IN), Scottsburg (IN), Charlestown (IN), New Washington (IN), Shawe Memorial (IN), Rising Sun (IN), Carroll County (KY), and Southwestern (IN) competed in the meet.

  • Worker killed in LG&E fall used false identity to obtain job

    When a construction worker fell to his death Sept. 18 at Trimble County’s Louisville Gas & Electric generating station, it was mere hours before a spokesman for his employer, Becon Construction, released his identity.

    Nearly two weeks later, that same spokesman is releasing new information – not about the cause of the accident, but about the man’s true identity.

  • Never say quit

    It took 15 years, but Juan Fernandez won his first Jim Ramsey Tennis Tournament this past weekend.

    The tournament, an annual event for 28 years, was held Saturday, Sept. 27,  at the county’s Robert M. Westrick Memorial Park. The tournament is named for Ramsey, a fellow Carroll County High School alumni of organizer Doug Fothergill’s, who died in an an automobile accident two years after graduation.

  • Driver charged with DUI after car strikes two houses

    A Louisville man was arrested Sept. 28 and charged with DUI after the vehicle he was driving collided with two houses outside Milton.

    Mark Jeffery, 36, was arrested shortly after the collision that damaged two homes in the 9900 block of Hwy. 421 North.

    According to Milton Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Jason Long, a 1999 Buick Lasabre crashed into the two homes, “running through the garage” of one, after Jeffrey lost control of the car just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

  • Team put others first

    Editor:

    I would like to compliment Chief Ronnie McCane, George Griffith and the entire Trimble County disaster management team.

    During the recent wind storm, they provided traffic control due to power outages to the traffic signals, risking personal injury when they needed to be at home taking care of their own properties.

    Trimble County should be proud of this fine group of men and women.
