  • District automated call system passed Oct. 17 test

    The new automated calling system for the Carroll County School District passed it’s trial run Oct. 17, according to Superintendent Lisa James, except for “a few glitches with work numbers.”

    The system dialed numbers from the district’s database of student home phone numbers; recipients received a message informing them that the call was a test.

    The system will be used to warn parents, guardians and students of emergency conditions and unscheduled school closings caused by inclement weather or other situations, James said.

  • GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

    The Delta Queen eased down the Ohio River past Carrollton on Thursday, Oct. 23, for what may be the very last time.

    Headed for Memphis, Tenn., the famed riverboat later docked along the riverfront at Madison, Ind. It was a crisp, sunny fall day, and many people from both the Kentucky and Indiana sides of the sparkling river gathered on the bank to pay their respects and get a last look at the historic boat.

  • Help available for heat costs

    Cold weather is approaching, and many people living in Carroll County may be wondering exactly how they will pay their heating bills this winter.

    A program to help these folks begins Nov. 3 at  the Carroll County Neighborhood Center, 220 7th St.

    The Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program will have twice the funding this year, according to a report from Gov. Steve Beshear’s office. Kentucky will receive more than $68 million in federal funding to administer through LIHEAP, said center manager Vicki Kemper.

  • Council seeks public hearing on planned storage facility

    Carrollton City Council decided Monday to pursue a public hearing request regarding a company’s plans to build a liquid-asphalt storage facility near the Kentucky River on land just south of Prestonville.

    Mayor Dwight Louden sumbitted the request earlier this month to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Louisville in response to a notice of plans for the facility, to be built by Louisville Paving Company Inc.

    Primarily, council wanted more specific information about the project and to address concerns about whether or not it will emit an odor into the city.

    Our country is in a scary place right now, with banks folding left and right, and Congress in the midst of hammering out a plan to stabilize Wall Street as it bleeds out in front of our eyes.

  • 3 teens charged in shooting at Oakview Estates

    Two adults and a juvenile were arrested late Sunday night for an alleged shooting that occurred early Friday morning, Oct. 24, at Oakview Estates, off of Boone Road.

    The arrests came after a tip was received by Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy J.T. Shaw, Sheriff Ben Smith said.

    The adults arrested were Laci B. Marsh, 18, of Highland Avenue in Carrollton, and Daniel R. Lucas, 19, of Lauren Avenue, Carrollton. Both are being lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center.

  • Panthers hang tough against DeSales

    The DeSales Colts of Louisville came into Carroll County High School’s Panther Stadium on Friday night with an impressive record, and escaped with a win.

    “I’m not making excuses, but I’m giving the boys a compliment,” Head Coach Mike Weedman said after the game. “We were without a lot of key players tonight, and we were still able to play the game that we did.”

  • RAIDERS FREEZE OUT POLAR BEARS

    Trimble County gave the visiting Bracken County Polar Bears a whooping in the annual Bedford Bank Bowl in a lopsided win 50-0 last Friday night. The win snapped Trimble’s six game losing streak.

    This was Trimble’s second win of the season, after getting off to a great start in the opening week, beating Casey County 50-7.

    “It seems every time we score 50 points we win,” coach Jesse Bray joked.

  • Blitz volunteers work on 17 area homes

    Sue Berry of Prestonville didn’t think she’d like plastic covering the windows of her trailer on Newcastle Pike.

    A senior citizen whose health requires her to be on oxygen and take regular breathing treatments, Berry said she was afraid the plastic would obscure the view of her back yard. But after the first panel of plastic was installed on a living room window by volunteers Rita Westrick and Kuvungal Davy, she had a change of heart.
