  • Ohio couple charged in alleged Carrollton check-fraud scheme

    Carroll County Sheriff’s Department arrested two people involved in an alleged check-fraud scam.

    Constance Marie Pikaart, 23, and Timothy Ray Perkins, 31, were arrested Nov. 10; both were lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center and later released on $5,000 full-cash bonds each.

    According to court records, Pikaart allegedly attempted to cash a forged check at the Quick Money pawn shop, 1417 Highland Ave., Carrollton.  Deputy Jim Hamilton said Pikaart also allegedly opened an account at US Bank at 416 Highland Ave., using another forged check.

  • Carrollton sporting new holiday decor

    Downtown Carrollton is being dressed up in new winter finery to give a festive atmosphere for the holidays.

    City workers Troy Harrell, Dennis Webster and Billy Aldridge were wrapping evergreen garland around lampposts on Main Street on a cold, raw day last week.

    Webster was hoisted up and down in a protected cage in the bucket of the city’s loader, first taking down the historic-marker flags attached to the lampposts. In the meantime, on the ground, Harrell was preparing the garland for Webster to attach to the posts.

    Finding reasons to be thankful can be difficult during the holiday season.

    I have never been a big fan of the holidays, even when my now 16-year-old daughter was a toddler and excited by the big family gatherings. Although I have never had a terrible holiday experience, I don’t remember a time when the season did not make me sad.

  • City prepares for visit from Old St. Nick

    Santa Claus is coming to town – in just nine more days.

    Thanks to the awesome connections Rita Davis has with the jolly ole elf, Santa will again make a guest appearance at Light Up Bedford.

    The town’s annual kick-off to Christmas celebration will take place Friday, Dec. 5 with food, gift shops and live entertainment leading up to Santa’s grand entrance at 6 p.m. at the courthouse square.

  • Brocious one of 20 state award finalists

    A senior at Carroll County High School recently was named a state finalist in the annual Wendy’s High School Heisman Award competition.

    While Kory Brocious and fellow senior Keshia Henderson were named male and female school winners of the award, Brocious was notified in October that he is one of the top 10 male finalists for the state of Kentucky.

    More than 200,000 students nationwide applied for the Wendy’s honor, according to the Web site.

  • Prescription medications top list of illegal drugs bought in sting operation

    While cocaine and heroin allegedly were purchased from some of the 68 people indicted and eventually arrested during a five-county, 18-month investigation, officials say the illegal sale of prescription drugs is a huge problem.

    Prescription medications can easily fall into the wrong hands because most everyone knows someone who has a prescription for some sort of painkiller.

  • Milton man arrested for child abuse

    A Milton man was arrested last week, charged with sexually abusing a child.

    Randall Scott Kelley, 30, of Greenbriar Road, was arrested Nov. 20 and charged with first-degree sodomy following an investigation into complaints he abused a young child at his home. The crime is said to have occurred earlier this month.

    The victim, according to Kentucky State Police Detective Todd Harwood, is under the age of five years.

    Harwood declined to release details of the investigation, however did say Kelley confessed to the crime.

  • Volunteer asks businesses to embrace festival

    On behalf of the Carroll County Tobacco Festival, I am writing this letter to the editor.

    About 14 people pull together and put on the festival every year. We put this on as a tradition to the community and the farmers now and of the past. We are trying to keep the heritage going on for our younger generation.

  • Fund-raiser beneficiary says thanks for the help

    “Thank you” doesn’t quite express how grateful I felt for all of the love and support shown by my family and friends. The monies raised enabled me to remain in my home and pay several illness related expenses.

    Beyond the monetary support the expressions of love and encouragement from my community helps me have courage and faith during the hard days of recovery that lie ahead.
