  • City council welcomes new members

    Carrollton City Council welcomed three new members to their ranks, as they met in regular session Monday, Jan. 11.

    Adam Raker and Tammy McBurney were elected in November filling seats vacated by Christen Brock, who chose not to run again  for personal reasons, and Bill Welty, who had been appointed.  

    Welty was appointed by Mayor Dwight Louden on June 23 to fill a vacancy created when then-councilman David Wilhoite was named county coroner to replace the late Jimmy Dunn. Wilhoite was elected to council in 2007.

  • State contest a learning experience for Hannah Ball

    While her Trimble County Lady Raider teammates were fighting for a win on the court Jan. 10, Hannah Ball was parading across a stage in the Galt House’s Grand Ballroom as a contestant in the Miss Kentucky County Fair pageant.

    Although Ball, the 2008 Miss Trimble County Fair, did not place at the state competition, the experience was one she said she would never forget. And hopes to have again.

  • Holiday food drive successful, but need continues

    I would like to express my appreciation to the people of Carroll County who participated in the Christmas food basket distribution this year.

    Whether they donated canned goods to the “Scouting For Food,” gave money or gift cards so we could buy perishable items, sorted and shelved donated items, or packed and distributed food baskets – it was a tremendous effort by this community to feed our hungry neighbors.

  • New deputy completes basic training at EKU

    Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy Travis Price has completed basic training on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University and is back in Carroll County on patrol.

    Price was one of 23 officers of Class 399 who completed the 18 weeks of training with other law enforcement officers from 15 agencies across the state. The class began with 27 individuals and 23 completed and graduated from the academy.

  • Losing streak ends

    The drought is finally over.

    After starting the season 5-4, the Raiders went on a five game losing streak that ended at home Jan. 12 when the team defeated Gallatin County 63-55.

    Monday night, the Raiders finally played like a team.

  • Former Milton resident charged with murder

    A former Milton resident was arrested for the alleged murder of his roommate.

    Kentucky State Police arrested Clester E. “Cletus” Mullins, 33, Thursday, Jan. 15, and charged with the alleged murder in the Dec. 6, 2008 death of Steven Michael “Catfish” Jones, 52. Mullins, originally from Eastern Kentucky, is also charged with tampering with physical evidence for allegedly moving the body from the crime scene and dumping it into a ravine.

  • Judge: Residents’ complaints may spur CSX repairs

    County Judge-Executive Harold “Shorty” Tomlinson said the railroad crossing on State Hwy. 227, near Hometown Pizza, has been deteriorating and in need of repair for more than a year.

    He’s hoping local residents will call a toll-free number to report the crossing to CSX, which owns the track and is responsible for its repair.

    Tomlinson said callers must give the crossing number, which is 8869107F.

    The phone number is (877) 835-5279 (TELLCSX) and the crossing number is 869107F.

  • Panthers spoil Wildcats’ homecoming

    The Panthers were the spoilers of the Gallatin County High School homecoming festivities, beating the home team by 10 points in an intense battle.

    The Panthers came out determined to end their four-game losing streak, and took it to the Wildcats on every possession. The Wildcats did not score until the first period was half over; the quarter ended with the Panthers on top, 17-6.

    The Wildcats played their normal tough defense, pushing hard, playing hard, never to be dismissed as anything less than formidable.

  • Testing will close one lane of bridge

    The Milton-Madison Bridge will be reduced to one lane this weekend as geotechnical crews drill core samples from bridge piers.

    From 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16 through 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, the northbound lane of the bridge will be closed as geotechnical crews with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet extract samples from two piers to examine whether the supports are capable of sustaining a new superstructure.
