  • Civil War exhibit new this year

    The Kentucky State Fair, an 11-day celebration of the history, heritage and culture of the Bluegrass State, opens tomorrow at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. Nearly 600,000 people attend America’s largest indoor fair, which uses all 1.2 million square feet of contiguous exhibit.

  • Crash survivor involved in documentary

    Harold “Bubba” Dennis was disoriented and afraid after a pickup truck driving the wrong direction on Interstate 71 in Carroll County crashed into the bus in which he was traveling on a Saturday night 23 years ago.

    He knew there had been a crash, but he didn’t know right away the bus was on fire or the driver of the pickup truck was intoxicated.

  • Officer responsible for Trimble, Henry animal control

    As the animal control officer for two counties – Henry and Trimble – Dan Flinkfelt spends a lot of his time on the road.

    Flinkfelt arrives daily at Henry County’s shelter in Eminence, where he works on paperwork, checks on the dogs in the kennels and prioritizes which calls require him to go talk to complainants in person.

  • State races: Beshear ahead as Fancy Farm approaches

    Gov. Steve Beshear has the advantage over his Republican challenger David Williams leading to the unofficial start of the gubernatorial campaign at Saturday’s Fancy Farm Picnic, political analysts say.

    However, they disagree on how fiercely the two candidates will clash when they deliver stump speeches at the historic political gathering in Western Kentucky. This is the 131st year of the picnic, known for its homemade barbecue mutton and desserts.

  • Poker run comes through county Aug. 21

    The second Helping Kids in our Neighborhood Poker Run is expected to attract about 200 bikers this year to aid Carroll County children in need this Christmas. The route includes a section of Trimble County.

    Organizer Kenny Jones said there has been a great response already this year for the Aug. 21 poker run, which begins and ends at Sunset Grill in Warsaw.

  • Legislative panel hears testimony on plan for alcohol sales at some state parks

    FRANKFORT  -- Plans to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at some state parks were presented to lawmakers during today’s meeting of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.

    The state has applied for liquor licenses at General Butler State Resort Park in Carrollton, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg and Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Cadiz, and at golf courses at My Old Kentucky Home State Park in Bardstown and John James Audubon Park in Henderson.
