  • Ohio River bridges highlight nation’s aging infrastructure

    President Barack Obama is using a crumbling Kentucky bridge over the Ohio River as a prime example of the need to rebuild the nation’s aging infrastructure.

    “There are private construction companies all across America just waiting to get to work,” Obama told Congress on Sept. 8, unveiling his newest job-creation plan. “There’s a bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that’s on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America.”

  • Conservation recruits sought

    FRANKFORT, Ky. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is seeking to fill 28 conservation officer recruit positions.

    Applicants must create an account online through the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet website and apply to the posting, which will be open for 10 days.

    The size of the recruit class depends on the vacancies at the time, said Capt. Myra Minton, acting assistant director of the Law Enforcement Division of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

  • Madison Regatta installs new officers, releases community impact data

    Madison Regatta Incorporated, during their general membership meeting held on September 7th, installed new officers for 2012. President Crystal McHargue passed the gavel to Herb Parker who will lead the organization for the coming year. This will be Mr. Parker’s second term, having served as president in 2001. Also installed were Kim Washer-vice-president, Pat Brooks-Race Chairman, and Jeff Chandler-Treasurer. Outgoing president Crystal McHargue completed a record four consecutive terms as Madison Regatta president from 2008 through 2011.

  • Shop With a Cop Trail Ride set Saturday, Oct. 1

    The seventh annual Shop With A Cop Trail Ride is scheduled for Saturday, October 1. The event is a fundraiser for Shop With A Cop, which helps provide Christmas presents for needy children in Carroll County.

    The trail ride features a 10 to 15 mile ride through Carroll County. The ride begins at the horse park on Highway 55 near English at 10 a.m. The fee is $12 per person and $5 for children under 12.

  • KSP promotes 29 officers

    The Kentucky State Police announced the promotion of 29 officers throughout the state at a special ceremony held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Louisville. Two KSP majors, two captains, four lieutenants and 14 sergeants were commissioned along with seven Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) sergeants.

  • State audit: LG&E and KU customer service lacking

    FRANKFORT – An independent review ordered by the Kentucky Public Service Commission has found numerous problems with customer service operations at Louisville Gas and Electric Co. and Kentucky Utilities Co.

    In a report issued Wednesday by the PSC, an outside consultant noted that the two utilities – the largest in Kentucky – are regularly failing to meet their own internal performance standards. The report makes specific recommendations to correct the shortcomings.

  • 1862 battle broke spirit of resident Henry Bottom

    Perryville resident Henry Bottom–known commonly as Squire Bottom to his many friends–was a farmer and justice of the peace whose home was caught in the crossfire of Kentucky’s largest battle.  After the fight, Bottom’s house became a field hospital. According to one eyewitness, a pile of amputated arms and legs, “some with shoes on, others with socks,” stood “four or five feet high” in one corner of the yard.

  • Perryville Battlefield hosts annual Civil War reenactment Oct. 1-2

    PERRYVILLE, Ky. – Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site will again play host Oct. 1-2 to the reenactment of the largest battle of the Civil War in Kentucky.

    The two-day event will include demonstrations of infantry, cavalry and artillery, along with authentic campsites and battleground tours. The highlight each day will be a military demonstration at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.

  • Kentucky to assist in evaluation of bridge

  • I-64 bridge closing congests Indiana, Kentucky traffic flow

    LOUISVILLE - Indiana and Kentucky transportation and law enforcement officials announced traffic plans aimed at managing extraordinary traffic congestion on the first work day following Friday’s closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge over the Ohio River between west Louisville and New Albany, Ind.

    The congestion will affect traffic throughout the Louisville and Southern Indiana region, not just those commuting across the Ohio River, officials warned.
