  • KSP plans safety checkpoints

    The Kentucky State Police will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints in the counties of Oldham, Trimble, Henry, Owen, Carroll and Gallatin during the period of January 23 - February 6, 2012.

    The intent of a traffic safety checkpoint is to provide for high visibility public safety service, focusing on vehicular equipment deficiencies, confirming appropriate registration of vehicles and the licensing of drivers.  Violations of law or other public safety issues that arise shall be addressed in accordance with Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws.

  • New agriculture commissioner asks auditor to examine previous KDA administration

    Agriculture Commissioner James Comer formally requested on Jan. 11 that Auditor of Public Accounts Adam Edelen conduct a special examination of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.   

    Comer, who was sworn in on Jan. 2, has already made some substantial changes to the KDA but said the audit is necessary to restore morale within the Department and to ensure the integrity of its operations.

  • Puppy mill defendant makes court appearance

    Terri L. Smith made her first court appearance Monday, Jan. 9, since being arraigned on 218 counts of second-degree animal abuse stemming from the Dec. 12 puppy mill/animal hoarding bust at her home in rural Campbellsburg.

    Judge Diane Wheeler gave Henry County Attorney Virginia Harrod until Feb. 6 to respond to a request for discovery, filed by Smith’s attorney, George R. Carter, of Louisville, and scheduled the next pretrial hearing for Feb. 20.

  • Ex-Trimble man opens Carrollton business

    Dan Alexander, a Trimble County native now living in Carrollton, learned to play pool when he was about 5 years old. Today, he has an eye on turning pro.

    Alexander recently opened Brothers Billiards at 427 Main St. in Carrollton.

    He decided his establishment would be smoke-free and alcohol-free, so that young people could come in and play, too.

    He’s had a few adults come in to play, only to turn around and leave when they discover there is no bar.

  • PSC accepts settlement in KU and LG&E environmental cases

    The Kentucky Public Service Commission has accepted broad-based settlements in two cases establishing new environmental compliance plans and associated environmental surcharges for Kentucky Utilities Co. and Louisville Gas & Electric Co.

    The compliance plans are intended to meet the requirements of several U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations affecting coal-burning electric power plants.

  • KSP: Smith death apparent suicide

    A Henry County man facing animal cruelty charges was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 20, at 25 Allison Lane in rural Campbellsburg.

    Trooper Michael Webb, public information officer with Kentucky State Police Post 5, said a family member had stopped by the property and discovered the body of Kenneth H. Smith, 71, in a vehicle.

  • 30 children spend day with KSP during ‘Shop with a Trooper’

    State Troopers from the Kentucky State Police Post 5 in Campbellsburg spent a day with children from the counties of Oldham, Henry, Trimble, Carroll, Gallatin, and Owen during Post 5’s annual ‘Shop with a Trooper’ program last week. KSP’s  ‘Shop with a Trooper’ program is an initiative providing Troopers an opportunity to impact the lives of children in need during holiday season, while providing children a chance to have positive interaction with State Troopers.

  • KSP warns: ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’

    The Kentucky State Police, Post 5, has started conducting the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over traffic safety campaign for the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holiday period.  The increased efforts are designed to combat the potentially increased number of impaired drivers resulting from Christmas and New Year’s festivities.  The campaign incorporates high visibility enforcement activities to enhance traffic safety while reducing traffic fatalities.
