  • Local musician teaches, mentors new music talent

    With a desire to learn to play music, and the right connections, which led them to Stangle for free music lessons, three local 12-year-olds transformed into a country/gospel band.

  • Prevention was top goal at Women's Health Fair on June 30

    Uninsured women ages 40-64 had an opportunity recently to gain vital information concerning their health through testing and expert advice.

    At the Woman’s Health Fair on Monday, June 30, the Three Rivers District Health Department offered screenings for various illnesses, including Pap smears, clinical breast exams, blood-pressure checks, cholesterol screenings.

    Vendors at the event also offered makeup tips and free tote bags and pink carnations.

  • Investigation continues into shootout that left one man dead

    MILTON, Ky. – Funeral services were held Tuesday for a Louisville man shot and killed by police following a two-and-a-half hour standoff in Milton on June 25.

    Jack D. Berressem Jr. died about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after barricading himself in a house at 113 Ferry St., and exiting the house several times to shoot at police.

    Kentucky State Police troopers were called to the scene after a passing motorist reported a possible domestic altercation at that address.

  • Allegations lead to suspension, resignation of teen pageant coordinator

    Allegations of improper conduct associated with the Trimble County Fair’s Miss Teen pageant has resulted in the resignation of a long-time fair board member and first runner-up Nikalette Brierly’s acceptance of the crown.

    Linda Craig, president of the board, confirmed Monday that an investigation was launched last Friday morning following a complaint of inappropriate behavior during the June 18 competition.

  • Consumers hit on all sides as fuel prices skyrocket

    An old saying in the trucking industry goes, “If you’ve got it, a truck brought it.”

    While that’s still true today, it seems consumers can add to it: “If a truck brought it, you’re gonna pay more for it.”

    With the cost of gasoline soaring near or above the $4-per-gallon mark nationwide, consumers’ pocketbooks are getting hit from all sides – not just at the pump.

  • Although national statistics continue to show a decrease in real estates sales, Trimble County property remains sought after.

    Jerry Smith of Century 21 Smith Realty and Vicky Cayton of Carrollton’s Century 21 Cayton Realty routinely assist property owners preparing to place small and large homes, building lots and agricultural acreage on the market. Although they agree there are fewer large homes selling in Trimble County than in the surrounding areas, they say that has nothing to do with the national downward trend.

  • Former Trimble resident, Burch, dies in Henry County shooting

    A shooting in Henry County last weekend left a former Trimble County resident dead.

    Joseph D. Burch, 31, of New Castle, was pronounced dead Sunday, July 6 following a shooting that took place at Osage Court apartment complex in New Castle.

    Robert Steven Elston, 54, a resident at the complex, has been charged with murder and was arraigned Monday in Henry County District Court. He pled not guilty to the charge and Judge Jerry Cosby set bail at $1 million.

  • Pilot, passengers OK after plane lands on Ohio River

    An emergency landing on the Ohio River near Carrollton ended what was to be an hour-long pleasure ride for a pilot and two passengers Wednesday, June 25.

    The pilot, Glenn A. Moorman of Union, Ky., formerly of Carrollton, brought the rented 1976 Grumman Cheetha single-engine plane down on the river when it lost power and the engine shut down. The plane landed upright in the river, allowing Moorman and passengers Arthur Bell and Justine D. Bell, both of Madison, Ind., to exit the plane.

  • Former mayor appointed to fill vacancy on Carrollton City Council

    Carrollton businessman Bill Welty is back in city government – for a few months.

    The former mayor was appointed to City Council on June 23 to fill a vacancy left by David Wilhoite in June. Wilhoite resigned from council after he was appointed Carroll County coroner. He replaced Jimmy Dunn, who served as coroner for 28 years until his death May 20.
