  • Preparations ongoing for Milton-Madison Bridge lift

    Lift preparations were still underway at press time yesterday in anticipation of “strand-jacking” the first truss section of the new Milton-Madison Bridge into place onto temporary piers.

    The procedure began early Monday when with the assistance of several tug boats, the 600-foot span, which was constructed on barges, was floated from the Milton shoreline into position at the base of the temporary piers.

  • More cemetery patrols sought

    A hallowed ground intended to be the final resting place for the remains of loved ones has instead become a haven for the living who, under the veil of darkness, allegedly use the premises for illicit activities.

    Commissioner Frank Floyd told his fellow members of the Bedford City Commission Monday of ongoing problems at the Bedford Cemetery.

  • Comeaux new commissioner

    As the first order of business at Thursday’s meeting of the Milton City Commission, Milton resident Lynn Comeaux was sworn in as the newest Milton Commissioner. Comeaux succeeds Gerald Owen whose resignation due to health reasons was announced by Mayor Denny Jackson during the commission’s April 12 meeting. Comeaux will serve out the remainder of Owen’s term, which expires on Jan. 1, 2013.

  • Animal shelter completion by end of month

    Contractor Tony Walker told Trimble County Fiscal Court on Monday, June 18, that the new animal shelter being built on Sulphur Road should be “100 percent complete” by Friday, June 29.

    “I feel confident about what I’ve left the counties with,” Walker said. Walker was hired by Trimble County to build the facility after bids from contractors for the project came in far above the $250,000 available from Trimble and Henry counties, which includes a $150,000 state grant.

  • County gets recycling grant, budget passed

    Trimble County has been awarded a $55,195 recycling grant from the 2012-13 Kentucky Pride Fund.

    The award was one of a total of 61 grants for recycling and household hazardous-waste grants announced June 13 by Gov. Steve Beshear and is intended to help reduce the amount of recyclable and hazardous materials going into landfills, according to a release from the state Energy and Environment Cabinet’s Division of Waste Management.

  • Relay for Life kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. at Bedford Elementary

    The Trimble County Relay for Life will be held Friday, June 15, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Bedford Elementary School. The event is set to run through the evening and early morning hours until 7 a.m., Saturday, June 16, with numerous booths, a survivors’ walk and lots of fun for the whole family.

    The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a community event that allows individuals the opportunities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember the loved ones they have lost to the disease and fight back to eliminate cancer.

  • Trimble Fair opens Monday, military to be honored

    The 2012 Trimble County Fair opens Monday, June 18, featuring six days of entertainment, pageants and amusement rides. Complete details of fair events, 4-H rules and other information was published in the “2012 Trimble County Fair Guide,” which was inserted in last week’s issue of The Trimble Banner. Gates 1 and 2 open at 5 p.m. daily. Casey’s Rides begin nightly at 6 p.m. Admission to the fair will be $10 from Tuesday, June 19, through Saturday, June 23.

  • 1st bridge lift planned for next week

    Special hydraulic jacking equipment is being installed at piers 3 and 4 of the Milton-Madison Bridge in preparation for the first span lift, tentatively scheduled to occur during the week of June 18. According to a fact sheet prepared by Walsh Construction, contractors for the bridge rebuild, the 600-ft truss, which Walsh employees have built on barges along the Milton riverbank, will be moved into place and lifted atop the temporary piers in a 36-hour procedure which may be spread over three days and may include some work after dark.
