  • Samuel ‘Sam’ Abbott, 86

    Samuel “Sam” Abbott, age 86 of Pendleton, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the VAMC in Louisville. The son of the late Ervin Allen and Florence (Mahoney) Abbott, Sam was a farmer and a WWII Army Veteran, receiving an American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

    Sam was preceded in death by two sisters: Katherine Jackson and Louise Spalding; and a great-granddaughter, Zaira Weaver.

  • Rebecca Mae Aldridge McCane, 89

    Rebecca Mae Aldridge McCane, 89, of Bedford died on May 8, 2013 at Signature Health Care in Bedford. She was born on November 13, 1923 in Trimble County, to the late Harvey and Eithel Jackson Aldridge.

    She is survived by her children: Linda Mahoney of Elkhart, Ind.; Harvey McCane of Bedford; Willa Shadburn of Sulphur; Joyce McClain of Smithfield; Jimmy McCane of Woodward, Okla.; and Teresa Rucker of Pleasureville; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.

  • Rachel N. Powell, 93

    Rachel N. Powell 93, of Bedford, died on May 11, 2013 at The Richwood in LaGrange. She was born on May 1, 1920 to the late James Franklin and Oshia Bell Simpson Newby in Bedford.

    She is survived by her children; Larry Powell of Bedford, Dallas Powell of Milan, Ind., Nicholas Powell of Pendleton, and Mark Powell of Campbellsburg; one sister Martha Hawkins of Indiana, many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

  • Phyllis Lynn Spurr DO, 53

    Dr. Phyllis Lynn Spurr, 53, of Flatwoods, formerly of Carrollton, died at Ashland Community Hospice on Saturday Feb. 16, 2013.

    A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.23, at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, 809 Highland Ave. in Carrollton. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until time of service on Saturday, at the funeral home. Cremation has been chosen by the family.

  • Paul H. Dowling, 70

    Paul H. Dowling, 70 of Milton, died on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at the Baptist Northeast Hospital in LaGrange.  He was born on Aug. 8, 1942 in Jefferson County, Ind., the son of Kelso and Florence (Stockdale) Dowling.

    Survivors include a son, Greg Dowling of Bedford; two daughters: Kathy L. Morris, of Edgewater, Fla., and Lisa Stewart of Milton; one sister, Betty Conover of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

  • Wilbur R. Horner, 82

    Wilbur R. Horner, 82, passed away Tuesday January 15 at his home in Worthville. He was born in Trimble County the son of the late John W. and Lula E. McDowell Horner. He was also preceded by a son Maurice, two brothers and five sisters. He was retired from the State Highway Department.

    He is survived by his wife Marlene Kelley Horner whom he married on January 4, 1958, his daughter, Carla (Anthony) Popp, his sons, Bryan Roger (April) and Troy Lane (Cathy) all of Worthville, and a sister, Thelma Davis. Seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.

  • Owen Barr, 84

    Owen H. Barr, 84 of Bedford, Ky. formerly of Henry County passed away at the Carroll County Hospital in Carrollton, Ky. on January 27, 2013. Owen was born in Oldham County on July 7, 1928 to the late Lawrence Oldham Barr and Mattie Wallace Barr.

    Owen is survived by his children, Ronald Barr and his wife Janice of Bedford, Ky; Sharon Harden of Glasgow, Ky; Rhonda Barr of Buckner, Ky ; Sandra Wright of Bedford, Ky. 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

    Anna Louise Freeman, 76 of Hanover, Ind., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 at her residence. She was born on May 29, 1936 in Louisville, Ky., to William K. and Rosie B. Hyden Freeman. She attended school and was raised in Trimble County.

    Clara L. Tucker Gividen 80, died Jan. 19, 2013 at Norton Brownsboro in Louisville.  She was born on April 23, 1932 to the late John E. and Rebecca S. Adkins Tucker in Covington.

  • Teresa M. Webster, 50

    Teresa M. Webster 50 of Bedford Ky. died Wednesday, January 9 at University Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She was born in Middletown, Ohio on July 23, 1962 the daughter of Mike and Donna Brown Grindle. She was a Lab Technician at King’s Daughters’ Hospital.

    She enjoyed quilting, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith.
