  • Mowing appears to be one of America’s great pastimes. Any day of fine weather will bring battalions of lawn tractors, push mowers and weed eaters to the front lines to do battle upon unruly grass. My husband is no exception; and lately, me.
The Navy marked my husband in an indelible manner. If his hair has the temerity to grow an inch he whips out the clippers and puts it back in its place. Woe betide the stray tuft that dares to grow beyond its fellows. After a thorough inspection the rebellious lock meets its doom at the merciless blades of the clippers.

  • Have you noted that as you age your doctor requests more tests than when you were in your 20s or 30s? Just like a car, as we age parts break down from wear and tear of age and use. One such test might be bone density or DXA. This test measures the amount of minerals in your bones or the bone density.

  • Weaning is usually a stressful time of year for calves. Limiting weaning stress in beef calves can increase their daily gain. Calves often experience four types of stress: physical, environmental, nutritional and social. You can help them avoid or minimize these with proper management.

  • The other day I found an old, yellowed and brittle newspaper cartoon that I had cut out and saved.
Dated from 1987, it’s a drawing of a woman sitting in a wing-back chair holding her knees with her feet tucked underneath her.
The caption reads: “This year’s Irrational Fears Grand Champion worries, from her home in Madison, Wisconsin, about being caught up in a deadly lava flow.”

Our new Rotary International District Governor, Missy Eckenberg, along with Assistant Governor JoAnn Hepperman, attended our August 29 meeting. Our District (6710) is large and is comprised of 55 clubs from central and western Kentucky, with some 2,800 + members. Each year, a new governor (term is August 1 to July 31 the following year) attempts to attend all club meetings at least once, a difficult and demanding task. Much road time!
