  • Time to plant spring flowering bulbs during fall season

    Fall is the time to think about all those flowers we associate with spring: daffodils, crocus, and other easy-to-grow flowering bulbs. If you aren’t growing spring-flowering bulbs in your landscape, you are missing out on some easy-to-grow plants that provide early color to your garden, according to Rick Durham, UK Extension Specialist in Consumer Horticulture.

    Did you preserve some of the goodness of your garden by home canning last summer?  If so, be sure to protect that goodness by storing your canned goods properly, away from high heat or freezing temperatures.

    Saving money is important no matter your age, especially with an economy that is much like a roller coaster. Kentucky youth can learn the importance of saving money by participating in the Piggy Bank Design Contest. The contest is a way for the youth of Kentucky to display their creative skills to their county and potentially the state, while becoming more aware of how to build wealth and reduce debt. The Piggy Bank Design Contest is the youth component of Kentucky Saves. Kentucky Saves Week begins Feb. 24 and ends March 2.

When used appropriately, social media can be very positive. When misused, there can be serious consequences for a family. Instances of cyberbullying and sexting have increased with the popularity of social media. In some cases, thieves have used social media accounts to find their next victims.

  • It’s time to be preparing your home for cold weather

    Early fall is the perfect time to start preparing your home for cold weather. There are several no cost or lost cost improvements that you can make to your home to reduce your winter bills.

    According to the United States Department of Energy, 46 percent of your utility bill goes for heating and cooling your home.  To reduce your heating costs, adjust your thermostat to as high or as low as is comfortable in the winter.  You may also want to consider a programmable thermostat.

    Now that fall has begun, county livestock producers should be alert to the increasing chance of frost and the risk some forages have of causing cyanide (Prussic Acid) poisoning.
