  • Harvesting blueberries and blackberries for full flavor

    Summer months are the harvest season for blueberries and blackberries, both of which have the potential to grow very well in Kentucky according to John Strang, UK Extension Fruit and Vegetable Specialist. Blue-berries, which are native to North America, are harvested from early June through early August. Blackberries are harvested from mid-June to early October. These delicious fruits offer newly recognized health benefits (high in cancer fighting antioxidants), but best of all, they capture the essence of summer in their sweetness.

The plate is divided into four unequal sections—vegetables and fruits fill the left half, and grains and protein fill the right. The glass represents dairy products.     Coming out of the wettest combined April and May on record, Kentucky agriculture producers are dealing with a multitude of problems including flooding and increased disease, according to Tom Priddy, UK Extension meteorologist.

    Data from Jan. 1 to May 31 reveals Kentucky’s wettest year on record with an average 31.38 inches of rainfall statewide. That figure surpasses the previous record of 31.18 inches set in 1950.
