  • Enjoy the cool, fall air at Kentucky’s state parks

In the state of Kentucky, we have 52 state parks.  Each state park offers a different view of the treasures in our state.  There are few sights more spectacular than the changing of the colors of the leaves in the fall.  What a great time to get outside and observe the beauty of our state and get some physical activity too!

  • Statewide 2nd Sunday is Oct. 9 to promote activity

Mark your calendar today—the next statewide 2nd Sunday is Oct. 9. 2nd Sunday is designed to get individuals, families and children moving and engaged in activity—whether they bike, walk, run, play or participate in fun and healthy activities.

  • Good planning a necessity to meet winter hay needs

Hay availability in Kentucky may be short this winter because of multiple, compounded issues. Due to weather events—last year’s drought and this year’s early record rainfall—both hay quality and yield are down. It is important to protect the hay crop you have and use it wisely—that smart conservation and planning will help make hay last longer through the winter according to Tom Keene, UK Extension hay specialist.

  • Creating more holiday enjoyment with less expense

Have you started the Christmas holiday shopping countdown yet? It may sound crazy since we are still enjoying the last days of summer, but with only slightly over 100 shopping days left, it is time to start thinking about a holiday budget. To avoid the holiday crunch on your wallet at the end of the year, plan for holiday expenses throughout the year.

  • Teaching your children about money

As national and international economic uncertainly lingers, parents have an opportunity to talk with their children about finance, budgets and money. This helps children gain a deeper understanding of how money allows families and other units, such as organizations or governments, to function. The big-picture financial news headlines provide an opportunity to teach children how those stories apply on a very personal level— to their own family.

  • Autumn apple season is approaching

Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the cool, crisp mornings followed by warm sunny afternoons. Haze is usually less this time of year. Sometimes, it seems you can almost see forever on a sunny fall day. Another reason I like fall is because of one of my favorite fruits, the apple. Who doesn’t enjoy hot apple cider to warm the insides on a cool fall day. On my birthday, each December, my wife Carole already knows what I want for dessert, apple dumplings! She makes the best!

  • Learning about state’s insects

Insects are encountered just about anywhere, making them a fascinating learning tool for youth. They also provoke a variety of reactions, from “ick” to “cool.” For kids who react favorably, starting a 4-H entomology project is a valuable way to learn more about Kentucky insects. Youth learn how to collect, label and display insect specimens, which they can use to participate in state fair projects.
