MADISON, Ind. – William Oscar “Bill” Meeks, 71, of Madison died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, with Pastor Mike Barnes officiating. Burial was in Macedonia Cemetery, Moorefield, Ind.
Mr. Meeks was born Jan. 11, 1937, in Henry County Ky., to the late George Ebb and Jesse Warren Meeks. He married the former Barbara Althoff on June 6, 1958.
His family moved from Jefferson County, Ind., when he was 10. He later moved to Switzerland County; he was a 1956 graduate of Vevay High School.
He was employed with Allied Ashland Oil Barge Company for two years, traveling the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. He hauled milk for Lowell Bliss Trucking out of Rising Sun, Ind., for several years.
He moved to Kentucky and farmed from 1965-68, raising cattle, hogs and grain near Glendale. He owned the Fairview Saw Mill for several years. He worked as a self-employed bulldozer operator. He was the owner and distributor of Meeks Horse Medications since 1981.
He was a member of the Switzerland County Saddle Club, the Horse Trotters Association, and the U.S. Boer Goat Association.
Survivors include his son, Dallas Ray Meeks of Fairview, Ind.; three daughters, Pallas Kay Meeks of Brooksburg, Ind., Billie Carol Ray of Vevay, Ind., and Emily Clare (David) Smith of Moorefield, Ind; two sisters, Frida (George Ellerbrook of Millington, Tenn., and Alma Hall of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Macedonia Cemetery or to the “Help Kids Learn To Ride Horses” program. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
