31st District tourney ends for CCHS boys

The Panthers were within seconds of advancing in the 31st District Tournament, but were foiled by Henry County Wildcats for the third time this year.

The border rival team entered the Carroll County High School gym that was bursting with fans for the second game on the night, and squeaked out with a 42-43 win.

“There’s only one team that gets to end their season with a win, and everybody else ends up with a loss,” Head Coach Carroll Yager said. “We had hoped to go a little further.”

The Panthers have lost all three games against the Wildcats by a combined six points. “It’s been close every game and every time the clock stopped, we were behind,” Yager said.

The Wildcats are the 8th Region Class A tournament winners; this was  their 21st win on the season.

The Panthers’ attitude at the beginning was that this would be the night they took down the Wildcats. Senior Casey Cable was on a mission, scoring four field goals in the opening period – eight of the team’s 13 points.

Panther offense went to sleep in the second period, and the team scored just five points against the Wildcats’ 13. Cable again contributed four of those five. Senior Chris Hendrick scored seven of his 13 points on the night during the third period.

Allen, Cable and Hendrick all were on the edge of fouling out of the game, with four each.

After swapping the lead in the fourth, the Panthers pulled ahead to 40-37. It looked good until they hit only two of five from the line. The Panthers had the last look at the basket, but the ball did not drop.
