Trimble grad earns PhD at UK

Ashley Marie Hawkins, daughter of Leslie Cutshaw of Milton and Dennis Hawkins of Milton and 2004 graduate of Trimble County High School, was awarded a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky on May 6, 2012.

Ashley’s advisors while at the University of Kentucky were  Dr. J. Zach Hilt of Chemical Engineering and Dr. David Puleo from the Center for Biomedical Engineering.

Her dissertation was titled “Biodegradable Hydrogels and Nanocomposite Polymers: Synthesis and Characterization for Biomedical Applications.” Ashley’s research has been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals.

During graduate school Ashley was accepted and participated in the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program which funded her first three years and received funding from the University of Kentucky Dissertation year fellowship her final year at the university.

Ashley has accepted a position as a Senior Staff Scientist with Ashland Inc., in Wilmington, Delaware.
