TCMS baseball splits two with Walton-Verona

Trimble County’s seventh and eight grade Raiders entertained Walton-Verona in middle school baseball on Tuesday, April 1, with the seventh grade victorious, 17-5, and the eight grade taking a 5-4 loss.
In the 8th grade game Walton got on the board first with Trimble walking the leadoff batter and with 2 out the cleanup batter hit a single to drive in the game’s first run. The Raiders responded in the bottom of the first. Aaron Haney was hit by a pitch; Reese Poe hit a single to move Haney to third and Evan Kunkel hit a ball that was misplayed by Walton’s 2nd baseman to tie the game up 1-1.
The game stayed that way until the last inning when Trimble hit two Walton batters and the outfield made three errors allowing the Bearcats to score 4 runs and put them up 5-1. Trimble responded in the bottom of the inning with a walk to Derrick Harris. Haney got on by a fielder’s choice but Harris was forced out at 2nd. With 2 out, Poe hit a single followed by a walk to Brayden Sedam. Kunkel then hit a double driving in Haney and Poe. Logan Clifford came in to pinch hit and came through with a single to drive in Sedam to close it to 5-4 Walton lead. With Raider runners on 1st and 2nd Logan Rodgers struck out to end the game.
Harris pitched 5 strong innings giving up only 1 earned run.
In the 7th grade game Walton’s leadoff hitter got a single, stole 2nd and later scored on a passed ball/wild pitch. Starter Dane Lacefield then shut the Bearcats down striking out the final two batters.
In the bottom of the first Trimble sent 13 batters to the plate. David Duncan led off with a single, Lacefield then doubled driving Duncan in. Duncan Ralston doubled, Chris Perkinson then drove him in with a double. Grant Weaver doubled, Logan Clifford and Landon Sutherland each had singles and by then the Raiders were up, 7-1.
Walton scored again in the 2nd when Lacefield hit a batter and then the Bearcats hit a double to drive him in. Lacefield settled down to strike out the side.
The Raiders continued to pile on the runs scoring 10 more runs over the next 3 innings to get the win 17-5. Lacefield went 3 innings, giving up 3 runs and striking out 7. Sutherland came in to pitch the 4th giving up 2 runs and striking out 1.
Trimble was led by Weaver and Lacefield with 2 doubles and a triple each and Perkinson had 2 doubles. Duncan, Clifford, Rodgers and Sutherland each had 2 singles. Ralston had a double. The Raiders travel to Henry County on Thursday.
