Did you know that 850 million people in the world are undernourished, and of them 153 million are children under age 5? As many as 13 million children in the United States go to bed hungry, and 24 percent of all the children in Kentucky live in poverty. In Trimble County, 18.6 percent live in poverty.
Volunteers from Trimble County fed an average of 90 children daily during the month of June. These children, who are sure to get lunch during the school year, are no less hungry when school lets out for the summer.
Studies show that even mild malnutrition can affect a child’s behavior, school performance and brain development.
The Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture administers the Summer Food program at the federal level. At the state level, the Kentucky Department of Education approves local sponsors. Here, the program sponors are Trimble County Schools Food Services. The Family Resource and Youth Services Center collaborates to recruit, train and maintain volunteers for the summer.
During the six-week program, nutritious meals are prepared daily at the Bedford Elementary School cafeteria, then packed safely for transport to the feeding sites and distributed to the children. Volunteers pick up and serve the meals, then return the coolers. This year, program sites were at Milton City Park shelter, Hardy Creek and the Morgan Community Center. Some sites offer games, crafts and activities.
Did you know that you could volunteer to feed our youth next summer? There are numerous opportunities throughout the year to make a difference in the lives of Trimble County’s children. We work with the Snacks-N-a-Pack and Youth In Need programs. Call the Family Resource and Youth Services Center at (502) 255-5110 Ext. 1044 with any questions about participating in thse programs that are vital to many of our youth.
