The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet has scheduled a public meeting to explain the application process and answer questions concerning an application submitted by Louisville Gas & Electric and KU Services Company for a permit to construct a special waste landfill at the utility’s Trimble County Generating Station.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Trimble County High School gymnasium, located at 1029 U.S. 421N in Bedford.

As reported in the Jan. 23 issue of The Trimble Banner, the Cabinet’s Division of Waste Management received an application for a permit to construct a landfill for disposal of industrial waste generated from the combustion of coal for electrical generation. These wastes include flue gas desulphurization sludge, bottom ash, fly ash, synthetic gypsum and pyrites.

According to the Division of Waste Management, the administrative portion of the application has been deemed complete and review of the technical portion of the application has begun. The proposed landfill would replace a previously permitted, but never constructed, landfill.

The current waste landfill is permitted for a waste disposal area of 840 acres. The new application proposes a waste disposal area of 189 acres, located between Ogden Ridge Road and Wentworth Road in Trimble County.
