Shirie J. Downs Cottongim, 63

Shirie J. Downs Cottongim, 63, of Bedford, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 in Louisville.

Born in Jefferson County Feb. 13, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Ira Thomas Downs and Edith Mildred Childs Downs Jones.

She graduated from Cumberland College and Georgetown College, receiving a degree in Secretarial Science.

She taught school for 27 years, retiring from Trimble County High School. Upon retirement she worked as a deputy clerk for the Trimble County Circuit Court Clerk. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Church and was involved in the Retired Teacher Association and the Bedford Rotary Club. She was treasurer for Bedford Rotary Club for over 2 years. She loved being involved in her church and clubs, enjoyed helping others with delivering senior meals and playing with her two dogs.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Cottongim, Bedford; her daughter, Rebekah Cottongim, Campbellsburg; two sisters, Beverly Ann McAfee of Mt. Washington, Ky. and Dola Dale Jones, Portland, Tenn.; step siblings, Sue Kopatz, Louisville, Karen Daring, Hardinsburg, Scott Yount and Chris Yount, McDaniels, Ky., and Eddie Yount, Louisville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Elizabeth Anne, and stepbrother, James Yount.

Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at Faith Baptist Church, in Bridgeport, Ky., with Dr. Tom Wilkes officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Frankfort.

Pallbearers were Danny Ray Inabitt, Billy Joe Rayborn, Steve Cottongim, David McQueary, Tommy Cooper, Tommy Thompson, Craig Cottongim and Edward Cottongim.

Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford was in charge of arrangements.
