Now in the third month of 2009, the Trimble County Relay for Life is gearing up for the big night of celebration.

This year’s event is set for Friday and Saturday June 12-13, at Bedford Elementary School.

Plans are laid out for a “Survivors Meal” at 5 p.m., hosted by Baptist Hospital Northeast of La Grange, Ky. Survivors must RSVP to Myrna Persell at (502) 268-3062 by May 26 so preparations can be made for the meal.

Following the meal, registration begins at 6 p.m. Opening ceremonies will start at 7 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony begins at dusk.

Relayers will walk the oval track remembering those we have lost to cancer and honoring those in our lives who have survived the disease.

The rest of the night will be filled with onsite fundraising, food and entertainment.

As of today, there are 32 teams signed up. If you would like to form a team or be a member of an existing team, call Myrna.

The deadline is April 28 to enter and receive your Relay for Life T-shirt. Shirts will be handed out May 26.

Each team is sponsoring fund-raising events – from the sale of Olin Mills portraits to a fishing tournament. Call Myrna if you are looking for something in particular and she can direct you to the team that maybe has that as a theme.

And for those who just want to see the action, come by, walk around, spend your money for a good cause and enjoy. There will be live entertainment and plenty of food.

In 2008, the first Trimble County Relay in nine years was put together in less than three months and was closed early because of high winds. Still, the Relay  raised more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society. We are praying for good weather for June..

For more information, call Myrna Persell or Denise Hall, co-chairs of the event. Hall’s number is (502) 255-5110, Ext. 1044.
