Alex Rand, a college athlete and junior Biology major at the University of Transylvania in Lexington, is blazing a trail as a cross country and track runner.
During Alex’s freshman year she was chosen a Top 40 Freshman for her leadership skills on campus and was awarded the 110 Percent Award in track and Best Finish in a Race in cross country.
She went on to set a school record in the 1500 meter race in track during her sophomore year, where she was again awarded the 110 Percent Award and the Most Dedicated Athlete Award in cross country.
As Alex began her junior year this year she was most honored by her teammates as she was named the Captain of the 2012 cross country team. Rand was also honored when her coach appointed her to serve as the Cross County Representative to the school’s Athletic Committee. The 2012 season recently ended and Rand was very proud of her team as they started off the season with second- and third-place finishes before going on to compete at the NCAA Conference Championship.
The Transylvania women’s cross country team finished 10th at conference and Rand received a personal best time in the race for the season. Alex was also honored at conference by being named to the 2012 NCAA All Conference Sportsmanship Team.
Transylvania recently held its annual Cross Country Banquet and Rand was awarded the 2012 Transylvania Pioneer Female Athlete Award. Head cross country coach Heidi Pinkerton was quoted in a recent article naming Rand as one of three runners that she is counting on to set the pace for this year’s team. “Alex has come back in great shape this season,” Pinkerton said. “She has put in work over the summer and we are expecting to see great things from her this season!”
Alex is definitely not a newcomer to the sport as she successfully ran in the Trimble County High School Runnin’ Raiders team from 2006 to 2010. Rand and her teammates won numerous races including two North Central Kentucky Conference titles, four regional championships and three state titles consisting of a State Runner-up her senior year, State 3rd Place finish her sophomore year and State 4th Place finish her freshman year.
During her high school track career her team won the Regional Championship her senior year. Alex was recognized all four years of high school with numerous team medals as well as the 4.0 Academic Award by her coaches all four years. Alex was also named a Governor’s Scholar, a Bellarmine Distinguished Scholar and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude with the TCHS Class of 2010. Alex is the current recipient of the Transylvania University Morrison Academic Scholarship, is a member of the Transy Student Art League, Transy cross country/track teams and the Transy Independents.
Alex would like to extend her appreciation to her parents, Rick and Vicky Rand, Bedford, and her outstanding high school coaches, Jeff Vincent, Mike Dunaway and Christy McKinney for always believing in her and inspiring her to be her best.
