Sunday afternoon’s rain soaked T-shirts but didn’t dampen spirits during Opening Day for the Trimble County Church Softball League.

The 2009 league has six teams, Milton Baptist’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3; Mount Byrd Christian Church’s Bats (team No. 1) and Gloves (team No. 2); and one team from Bedford Christian Church. All games are played on the softball field at Trimble County Park.

Though the ultimate goal of the league may be fellowship and community involvement, the fierce competitive spirit of the players should never be under estimated.

After circling for prayer and applying SPF-40, the first teams took to the field about 2 p.m. The opening game between the Mount Byrd Bats (visitors) and Milton Baptist No. 3 (home) would prove to be a real barn-burner.

The Bats struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first; Milton Baptist 3 answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

This offensive barrage continued for the next 50 minutes. When the dust settled and the time limit of one hour per game had expired, Milton Baptist 3 was named the winner with a tally of 16-11.

The second game of the day featured two other teams from the same two churches, as the Mount Byrd Gloves challenged Milton Baptist No. 2.

Choosing not to follow in the footsteps of their brethren, this game turned into old-fashioned pitchers’ duel. In a competition marked by stellar defensive, Mount Byrd came from behind at 4-3 into a 4-6 lead in the fifth inning.

But two batters into the fifth, dark clouds that had loomed on the horizon crept over the field, and God seemed to say, “Let there be rain.”

And it was so.

Though both teams held the field, hoping the shower would pass, instead it turned into an all-out downpour. The rain total was nothing that would have scared Noah and his family, but it was enough for officials to call that game and postpone the other two on the schedule for the day between Milton Baptist No. 1 and Bedford Christian, and  Milton Baptist 3 and 2.

The final innings of Mount Byrd/Milton Baptist 2 matchup will be played at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, before the regularly scheduled lineup of games.

League play is scheduled for Sundays through out June, July and August, with a postseason tournament set for Aug. 16.

Everyone is welcome to come partake in the festivities and fellowship. Bring a lawn chair, bring a friend.

Michael McLaughlin, coach of the Mount Byrd Gloves team, volunteered to provide this writeup.
