It took 15 years, but Juan Fernandez won his first Jim Ramsey Tennis Tournament this past weekend.
The tournament, an annual event for 28 years, was held Saturday, Sept. 27, at the county’s Robert M. Westrick Memorial Park. The tournament is named for Ramsey, a fellow Carroll County High School alumni of organizer Doug Fothergill’s, who died in an an automobile accident two years after graduation.
Fernandez has participated in 15 tournaments and was very excited with the win, Fothergill said.
John Leep of Carrollton, who has won the annual contest many times, didn’t participate this year. Fothergill said everyone was pretty excited about having a shot at winning this time around.
Funds raised from the event benefit the CCHS boys and girls tennis teams. He said 10 tournament sponsors helped defray expenses, so that money raised from entry fees can be used for the high school teams.
