Milton Dept. receives grant

-A A +A

During emergencies, it is vital that firefighters have the tools to do their job effectively and efficiently. Communication is key to coordinating operations and ensuring the department performs well as a team and stays safe. Now, thanks to a $20,000 grant awarded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, the Milton Fire Department will have new state-of-the-art communication equipment.

The grant will fund:

(1) Apparatus headsets for their fire engines. These headsets will allow firefighters to communicate with each other in the truck and hear instructions before arriving at the scene of an incident, providing a safer environment for emergency workers and any citizen that may be in harms way.

(2) New pagers. By replacing their old, worn out and outdated pagers, firefighters will reliably receive calls for service when they are not at the station.

“Firefighters have enormous responsibility to keep themselves and the public safe during emergencies,” said Fire Chief Jason Long. “It’s critical they have the proper communication equipment to do this and, because of the donation, local residents and firefighters will be better protected.”

The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The program is designed to provide needed equipment, training and educational tools to local fire departments and burn prevention organizations. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has issued grants to nearly 1,800 different organizations totaling more than $29 million.
