Miller recognized as NAIA scholar athlete

A former Carroll County student has been named to the 2008-09 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar Athlete team.

Brett Miller, a 2006 graduate from Carroll County High School and former member of the Panther basketball team is currently a student/athlete at Union College in Barbourville, Ky.  

He was named to the Division I and II men’s basketball Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete team in March, according to a press release from the college.

To be named to the team a player must be a junior or above in academic standing, with a grade point average of 3.50 or above.  Miller is a biology major and has a 3.86 GPA, according to his parents Roberta and Dave Miller of Carrollton.  

“It’s a chore sometimes, lots of early mornings and late nights, but hopefully it will pay off in the future,” Brett said in a recent phone interview.

Miller also received honors as an Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Academic recipient.

Miller is the starting forward for the Union Bulldogs and started in 22 games and averaged 7.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, according to the school website ucbulldogs.com.

The Union Bulldogs finished the season even, with a 15-15 record and a 10-8 conference record, according to the school website.

Miller is the grandson of Mary and Raymond Miller, also of Carrollton.
