Team wins with online sweepstakes

Even though she graduated from Carroll County High School last year, Hayley Franklin still was able to score for the girls volleyball program.

Franklin, a freshman at Northern Kentucky University, last year entered her team in an online sweepstakes sponsored by Refuel with Chocolate Milk and Addidas. On Thursday, “Refuel” representative Danny Prokup visited the school to present Franklin, the team and Head Coach Wilbert Lowe III with a check for $1,000 and a trophy – shaped like a glass of chocolate milk. The team also can choose $1,000 worth of equipment from Addidas.

“This is pretty neat,” Prokup told the gathering in the CCHS library. “You were one of 25 schools chosen nationwide. There were literally thousands of entries. ... It’s an honor to be nominated for this, and also to win the award.”

Prokup said the criteria they looked for was “a team that embodies not only school spirit, but chocolate milk.”

Franklin said she entered the team on a whim. Did she expect them to win?

“Never in a million years,” she said. “But I figured I’d give it a shot.”

Franklin sent in a photo of the team and told how the coach has inspired them and how well the team worked together, she said. She also said the team often refreshed themselves after practice with chocolate milk.

After receiving the check, Lowe vowed: “Never a day will go by that I won’t drink chocolate milk.

Principal John Leeper said the school encourages students to “find ways to make a difference, and here’s a young lady who serves after she’s left. She planted a seed, and over time it grew and blossomed into this. ... Take this gift you’ve been given, and better the program.”
