Meals on Wheels delivers nutrition

If you thought Meals on Wheels delivered cold, boring sandwiches and “rubber chicken” dinners, think again.

Recipients of the program in Trimble County are treated with yummy-looking dishes from Masterson’s Italian Restaurant in Louisville.

For instance, on Monday’s menu was baked ziti, capri-blend vegetables, a mixed-vegetable salad with Italian dressing, pineapple rings with granola and skim milk. Tuesday’s included a pork cutlet with cranberry-orange relish, a baked sweet potato, kidney bean salad, vanilla pudding and chocolate milk.

The Meals program, in its 19th year in Trimble and based at the Senior Center at the county park, serves anywhere from three to a dozen seniors on any given day, said program director Shirley Young.

Donations are encouraged for the meals, but no one is denied a meal if they cannot pay, she said.

Seniors can sign up for the service long-term or may sign up temporarily, for instance while recuperating from surgery.

Tri-County Community Action Agency, which funds the Meals program for Trimble, Oldham and Henry counties, have encouraged Young to increase the number of seniors served here in the county.

“We need at least 20,” she said.

Young said she relies mostly on word of mouth and local advertising to get seniors signed up for the free service. And every March, which is National Meals on Wheels Month, she invites local officials to deliver meals for a day to help build awareness of the program.

This week, County Judge-Executive Randy Stevens rode shotgun Monday with volunteer driver Amy Temple to deliver meals in Bedford.

Today, Wednesday, is Milton Mayor Denny Jackson’s turn, Young said.

In all, 10 volunteers help through the week to divide the large trays of food from Masterson’s into individual meals and make deliveries every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Young said when the program began, meals were not delivered on Thursdays, which were set aside for home medical visits. The schedule never changed, so on Wednesdays, she sends boxed lunches out with the hot meals for the seniors to eat on Thursdays.

Culminating Meals on Wheels Month this year is a 2-mile March for Meals Walk-a-thon starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27, at the La Grange Community Center in Oldham County.

Registration is $20 per walker, along with any money raised from sponsor donations. Participants who sign up sponsors will be entered in a separate contest and the three walkers who collect the most donations will earn prizes.

There also will be door prizes and refreshments served.
