In the wake of stricter federal environmental regulations, Kentucky Utilities asked the state Public Service Commission recently for permission to spend as much as $800 million to build natural gas-fired power generators to replace older coal-fired units. KU expects to eventually ask for a 4 percent increase in rates to pay for the new units.
