Ghent City Commission

-A A +A
By The Staff

Voters will be asked to select four of the five candidates, listed alphabetically.

Each candidate answered the questionnaire in phone interviews.

Lisa Barr, 42

Deli manager at Cowboys in Ghent

Carroll County resident for 33 years.

Why are you running for office?

I would like to see if I can make a difference and hopefully make the town better.

I believe that one of the most important things I have accomplished is the new Ghent City Park.  It stays packed with kids all the time.

I would like to keep things like the park up. I would like to see more business come into town, like a laundromat or a nice restaurant.  I would like for Ghent to look as pretty as Warsaw.

Why are you best qualified?

I care about Ghent.  I love it here. I know most of the people here, and I know what they want.

Charles Eaves, 60

Retired from Arkema

Lifelong Carroll County resident

Has served on Ghent City Commission for two years

Why are you seeking re-election?

I would like to continue the improvements we have made in the last two and a half years.

I have solved some drainage problems and am currently working on a sidewalk grant proposal. I would like to continue the progress we’ve made and make Ghent a better place.

Why are you best qualified?

My record speaks for itself. I saved the city $2,500 per year by leasing a field the city owns, so it can be mowed for hay; and I have mowed the rest with the city mower.

I cleared the riverbank on city property that has been overgrown for years.

After Hurricane Ike I worked with Class D prisoners and hauled away 62 loads of debris.

David Hendren, 55

Resident of Ghent for 3½ years

Owner of Poet’s House, River Dance Salon, Gen. J.E. Tandy Banquet Hall

Has served on Ghent City Commission for 2½ years.

Why are you seeking re-election?

I would like to continue to be instrumental in the growth of Ghent. I have been very helpful in getting the park built for the children and residents of Ghent.  I have helped with code enforcement and general cleanup.

I own three businesses in Ghent, and I continue to be a voice for the people. I will help fight for the people of Ghent and make it a better place.

Why are you best qualified?

My qualifications include: knowing the job, having experience and I have proven I can uphold what I promise.

Cheryl Nohner, 43

A former LPN, now employed as a steel worker at Gallatin Steel

Carroll County resident for nine years

Why are you running for office?

Ghent needs someone who doesn’t have a hidden agenda and works for the good of the people.

I would like to try to help develop the waterfront and unite the community.  I would like to possibly bring in a few new businesses.

Why are you best qualified?

I believe I am qualified because I can sit back and see what’s wrong. I am not part of the “good ol’ boy” system. I’ll fight for everybody.

Linda Taulbee, 64

Owner of Ghent Tavern

Lifelong Carroll County resident

Has served on Ghent City Commission for six years

Why are you seeking re-election?

There are things I would like to accomplish, such as cleaning up our riverbank and getting sidewalks.

I helped get the new Ghent City Park, and hopefully we will get a new boat ramp.

Why are you best qualified?

This will be my fourth term if I am re-elected and I have also served on the Planning and Zoning board.

I am devoted to the improvement of Ghent.
