At 4 p.m., Monday, Milton and Bedford Fire Departments responded to the report of a field fire on Riverview Drive on the Milton hilltop. The fire was located in a field east of the Milton Fire Station No. 1 and west of Moffett Cemetery.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found a large cornfield on fire. The fire quickly spread to around 40 acres of the cornfield, from which the crop had recently been harvested.

Fire units and personnel from Milton, Bedford, Carrollton’s Westside, and Ghent worked for more than two hours to control and extinguish the fire.

The fire was contained to the field and, although several residential dwellings are located in close proximity to the cornfield, the blaze did not spread to any structures in the area.

According to a statement released by Milton Fire & Rescue, the fire was the result of an illegal burn in the area that spread to the field.
