English school reunion planned Saturday, Oct. 2

It’s hard to believe it has been almost a year since the little town of English experienced a very unique event: the first-time ever English School reunion. The idea was born by a hand full of alumni and nurtured by a 17-20 member committee. The event came to fruition the first Saturday in October last year and was a huge success. Pastor Dave and Mrs. Willena Finley, present owners of the school building, were very instrumental in helping the plans develop for such a day. Due to their extreme, genuine interest in learning more history of the school’s activities from 1929 to 1963, plans blossomed for the reunion. It was a concerted effort from so many people, way too numerous to name each individual, that allowed for a wonderful day. However, mention does need to be made of Darrell and Judy Taylor of Tallahassee, Florida, son and daughter-in-law of Russell and Audrey Taylor, for lavishly sponsoring all advertising; Floyd Bowling for his generous contribution; Ben Smith and Deputies for traffic control, along with Renzie Smith; Shorty Tomlinson for furnishing a van and a driver for shuttle service to and from the church parking lots; the Fair Board; those who provided trucks, wagons, four wheelers, and hay; photographers; DVD and CD developers; DJ and music contributors; teen workers from the NHS, the English Christian Church and the English Baptist Church.

This letter is serving as a belated “Thank You” to each and every person who helped in any way to make our day last year one that people will long remember. I apologize for not being able to name each individual who gave time, money, energy, effort and concern in this project. It has been an on-going project, due to continuation of sales of reunion items at both the December Bazaar and the Spring Bazaar. In addition, names are still being accepted for placement on the recognition board hanging in the front hallway of the school. So, if interested, come Saturday, October 2nd, prepared to reserve your $5 engraved metal plate to be placed on the board.

It has been decided that the first Saturday of October each year will be the English School reunion-but in a modified version from the first one. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2nd, come out to the school for a combination reunion/bazaar. Go to www.schoolhouse1929.com or call (502) 732-5536 for more information.
