English graduates plan October reunion

I’m writing to attempt to make contact with as many people as possible for an important event being planned this fall. 1929 marked the first year of the English School functioning as an education facility for grades one through eight.  Several years later, it expanded to include some high school grades, but only for a few years. The school was an important part of numerous lives and was the center of activity for the English community for many years. The last graduating class walked across the stage in May of 1963.

Though years have passed, many of us have not forgotten our formative years in that building and the fond memories of life in those days.  It is practically without exception that when any of us “oldies” from that community get together, something is reminisced of English School days.  Memories are forever being rekindled of early childhood life in that school building.

So, when mention was made a few years ago of a “get-together,” few felt the urge to initiate the endeavor since it encompasses a huge span of time which began eighty years ago.  What a mammoth undertaking just to get started, but with encouragement from so many alumni, the first meeting was held in April to assess the interest in planning a reunion.  With the present owner, Pastor David Finley, wanting to learn as much history of the building and of life in those days, it helped make the task easier to start.

Now, with the third planning meeting scheduled for Aug. 15, 1 p.m., at the school, we are well underway for that big day on Saturday, Oct. 3. Publicity is critical in spreading the word of this event and we are anticipating attendance from all over the United States and maybe even a few foreign addresses.

A website, www.englishkyschool.com, has been developed to help share information, including pictures.  We are asking everyone to help contact anyone they know who may have any affiliation whatsoever with the English School, whether it be as a student, teacher, cook, bus driver, custodian, assistant, etc.
